For the past few years the public has been bombarded with rhetoric from the opponents of liquefied natural gas. During that time the proponents have been willing to let the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission process take place, although not without questions and input. However, it has become obvious that the proponents have become tired of the ramblings of the opposition and are, for the first time, showing up publicly to support their position.

*Ron Opitz, In My View

The proponents are questioning the self proclaimed expertise of the opponents and their “win at all cost” attitude. We continued to experience the ongoing rambling from people who seem “to know the value of everything and the price of nothing” at the recent FERC meeting, held on Oct. 27. The meeting was an organizational disaster, but was an excellent example of those who are speaking out in support of the Jordan Cove Project. At that meeting it became obvious that the opponents were frustrated not to have a “free forum” for presenting their views.

Part of what the opponents do not seem to understand is that without living wage jobs families cannot survive, and the socio-economic fallout is telling. This assertion can be supported by the number of legal cases involving spousal abuse, child abuse, alcoholism and illicit drug abuse. All are part of an economic downturn that deprives some of our citizens the ability to support (feed, clothe, shelter) and educate their families.

Such conditions do not necessarily increase the frequency of abuse, but the incidences are harder to track since the offenders use a poor economy as a way to mask their behavior. It is noteworthy that the numbers have not decreased over the past 36 months. Also, the Department of Housing for Coos County, reports that there are more than 1,000 people per month who contact the authorities seeking shelter.

Another example is that the Coos Bay School District has 62 percent of its approximately 3,550 students on the Free or Reduced Cost Lunch Program. In fact at one school, Madison Elementary, 77 percent of the 466 students are on the lunch program. The program also continues through the summer months, sometimes providing children with their only meal of the day.

Why Jordan Cove? The approximately $2 billion industry will offer new jobs and tax payments of over $2 million per year during the first three years, and that will increase to approximately $10 million per year after that.

We no longer can sit back and allow families to become victims of the poor judgment of a few citizens who are against expanding our economy, especially our Jordan Cove Project. The wishes of the majority that support the Jordan Cove project will continue to be heard.

I heard every union guy voted for this lng scam and still lost wrote on Nov 14, 2008 5:04 PM:

Kinda pathetic & sad that everyone union member that is begging con man Bob Braddock for some temporany construction jobs in the future voted for this Lng SCAM & they still lost 52% to 48%! Obviously the vote would be a HUGH % against if it were a Oregon state wide vote & that's why Gov Ted & his clown puppets & con man Bob Braddock don't want a vote on this SCAM!

The World's own Polls are easily manipulated. All you need is a link to the website and minions with nothing to do at several computers!!

I say kick Ron Opitz and Tim Bishop out of office, because they are about as bright as a fence post. CHRIS, Is your proprty affected by this "SCAM"?

I am a registered republican and dont want this lng here or in the usa wrote on Nov 10, 2008 8:56 AM:

Lng is OLD way of thinking people, anytime you increase your dependence on foreign countries for anything especially energy needs, you are worse off (Anyone remember the 1970's oil embargo where OPEC stopped selling to the USA & oil/gas prices tripled in a very short period of time???)! A no brainer on this being bad for Oregon & the USA, very little to gain (A few extra tax dollars, that'll just be dumped into Oregon's welfare system, rail line or New Aiport SCAM programs going to nowhere fast), but alot to lose (Higher natural gas prices, due to Lng being more expensive, Oregon land lost, especially to the 400 directly affected citizens, air polluter & safety issues that will NEVER get better)! This Republican says NO this useless Lng idea & SCAM is a good word to describe it also!

Think again Chris wrote on Nov 10, 2008 8:42 AM:

That little tax money gained for this LNG SCAM would be put into the other Oregon SCAM projects (Rail line, New Airport, etc.), thus you get 39 created jobs that outsiders get, because no local will qualify due to education & experience requirements, an air pollution maker, 400 Oregon citizens lose their land & trash our beautiful coast, just so California can get some expensive gas! Such a deal...NOT!

The World's own poll shows once again the people do not want this!

Chris wrote on Nov 9, 2008 8:14 AM:

I would love to vote on this ... and my vote would be yes. Simply because we need jobs in this area. I am tired of paying taxes to go to the Welfare Recipients that don't event want to get a job. I don't mind helping those down on their luck. But I am tired of not being able to find staff because they make more on the system than they would working.

It continues to amaze me Mr. Opitz, that Coos Bay was ever considered as a site for an LNG terminal, when its unsuitability in every aspect is so patently obvious.

That said, you know full well that the real underlying reason for it is to facilitate future importation of nuclear waste into our harbor for shipment out to Yucca Mountain. That's the only possible commodity which would make the railroad pencil again also, and it would be nice to have you and other local 'leaders' be honest with us about that someday.

Oregon and the USA need to go forward not backwards wrote on Nov 6, 2008 3:12 PM:

Being more dependent on foreign countries for our energy needs is a failed practice we should of learned in the 1970's with OPEC! This dinosaur Lng SCAM industry is going to lead the USA, instead of the USA leading the world with clean inexpensive energy sources such as solar, wave, wind, etc! Only reason this Lng SCAM is here because California has rejected this every time it's been tried there!

P.S. I heard every union member voted yes on the poll for or against Lng at Jordan Cove (Home page of the World) on why it's doing so well, thinking & praying con man Bob Braddock will help them! Have a state wide vote Bob Braddock, if you think the majority want it, even though we know it won't happen, because you know the majority don't want it!

Perhaps the World reporter should mention that the newspaper conducted a Poll in early November and the opposition to LNG won by almost a 2 - 1 margin. I don't care because I live far enough away and I don't shop in North Bend. The majority of the people in Coos County don't want LNG here. Find some real jobs Mr. Opitz or move on so we can employ a jobs creating expert.

tomr wrote on Nov 5, 2008 10:31 AM:

Dear Gene L, the funding source for SCDC is you the tyxpayer who sends money each year through your city government to SCDC. There is also private money sent to SCDC. Please remember what Mr. Opitz forget to mention that LNG developers are desparate to site terminals on every coast of the USA. They have offered communities millions, Long Beach California was offered $500 million, to look the other way. All said no thanks. Yet here we rich Coos County taxpayers are told that we are so desperate for a few jobs that we will pay the LNG developers cost of conducting business. I wish that you would pay me for doing business here.

Proponants of this LNG terminal have never said the DEIS is adequate, legal or acceptable. Proponants have never said one word about the impact on private lanowners and jobs inland. Proponants have only attacked the people who have stood up and asked questions. If you want to build this monstrosity. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS!

“to know the value of everything and the price of nothing”. A quote from Mr. Opitz's comments. The way I heard it was "to know the price of everything but the value of nothing".

Free lunch program for children, spousal abuse, child abuse, alcoholism and illicit drug abuse and LNG? Mr Opitz offers LNG as though it's the only possibilty for improving the economy of this area. I am not aware of a single success story attributable to the SCDC and am not aware of their funding source but I am curious. There is quite a list of options in the safe energy realm.

Last week Mr Opitz spoke from the podium, at a meeting which was organized so that citizens could make comments to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Statement which was written about the Jordan Cove project. The guidelines, which were announced to all present, were that the comments were to be made about the DEIS. Mr. Opitz, instead used the time to espouse his opinion on the Jordan Cove facility and verbally assault a female opponent of the project, who said nothing, before or after him, to inspire his wrath.

I have been to several informational meetings given by the Williams Corp about this pipeline. They stated that after the line is in place Oregonians would have about 6 jobs. This does not constitute a "boost" in my opinion. I am sure that the estimated 1500+ jobs predicted by renewable energy sources coming to Oregon is more what I would consider a boost.

geof wrote on Nov 4, 2008 5:28 PM:

Mr. Opitz conveniently forgets that he dines at the public trough. His five year (so far) annual $100,000 plus salary is paid by all Coos County residents - we don't get to say no - and those thousands of us who pay him and oppose local LNG do not expect him to shove LNG down our throat. After spending about $2 million in five years, SCDC and Mr. Opitz have failed to produce jobs. We need someone leading the jobs producing effort who has created jobs during their professional life time. We taxpayers should not be so eager to subsidize a local entity that will make $2 billion annually. We may get $2 million in taxes, but we get to pay for all of the security of the LNG product - a cost more than $2 million annually. And, we get to wonder on which day we will be incinerated by a catastrophic event. Thanks Ronnie!

Our economy needs the boost having expensive LNG not wrote on Nov 4, 2008 2:09 PM:

How anyone things this Lng fossel fuel could help our economy needs to think again because:

Natural gas coming from Canada & the Rockies is cheaper then importing Lng!

Lng creates more dependence on foreign countries, creating less jobs vs having our own energy sources here & higher prices here since Lng is more expensive then natural gas from Canada or the Rockies of the USA!

Lng is a air polluter, having an open flame burning 24/7/365 days a year at the storage structure vs bringing natural gas from Canada or the Rockies through sealed pipes!

400 Oregon citizens will lose 80 foot section of their land to this Lng at Jordan Cove too out of the 230 miles of Oregon land lost!

Finally, the majority Oregon citizens are against this Lng at Jordan Cove & if Bob Braddock, Gov Ted & his Port Commissiors don't believe that, have a Oregon state vote & let Oregon citizens decide on this Lng at Jordan Cove instead of FERC's present dictatorship over individual state/citizen rights!

Few people against this LNG SCAM then have a Oregon state vote wrote on Nov 4, 2008 1:53 PM:

This article is totatly false on saying only a few are against this LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove, because if Bob Braddock thought for a second that the majority of Oregon citizens wanted this, he would of already had a vote on it! That's why Republican's create that 2005 FERC Dictatorship law that ok's all placements of this expensive LNG over individual state/citizen's right to vote on this! Only reason this LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove is here, is because California has rejected every time & that's why there is 230 miles of pipeline violating 400 Oregon citizens land on it's way to Northern California so the gas can be used!

Holly wrote on Nov 4, 2008 11:41 AM:

Living wage jobs come from employers paying living wages, and employees demanding them. The decline of union membership in this area mirrors the decline of living wages. WORKERS ORGANIZE!!!

Why does Bob Braddock refuse to have a Oregon state vote on this LNG SCAM wrote on Nov 4, 2008 10:36 AM:

Hey con man Bob Braddock,

Have a Oregon state wide vote on your LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove?

I know the answer, because the majority would vote against this UNSAFE, 400 Oregon citizens 80 foot wide section of land being taken away from them, Air polluter that will create a few jobs that no local will quality for! Then you (Since you said quote: If Oregon doesn't want Lng or me, I'll be GONE!) & Gov Ted & his clown puppet commissioners (They claim the majority want this SCAM) would have to answer to the majority wishes of getting rid of this LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove!
