Since 2004, the Bay Area has been mired in a debate about a dangerous liquefied natural gas facility and pipeline. Meanwhile, other Oregon communities have successfully brought in another sector of the energy industry that is creating thousands of well-paying, secure, permanent jobs. While we’re busy arguing about whether or not to bring in a dinosaur industry, the rest of our state is attracting the jobs of the future.

*Jody McCaffree, In My View

The Jordan Cove LNG plant will cost our economy dearly. There’s the threat of eminent domain on 151 miles of private property, as well as the destruction of salmon-bearing streams, oyster beds, fish habitats, farm and forest lands, among other negative business impacts. Local businesses such as Clausen Oysters, Kentuck Golf Course, Coos County Sheep Co. will be negatively impacted by this proposal.

It turns out that LNG is a bad investment of Enron-like proportions. Two LNG terminals built on the Gulf Coast just went online, long enough to fill their storage tanks. Now, it turns out, no one wants to buy this overpriced foreign gas. America has its own 60- to 100-year supply, and local utilities and other customers can get domestic natural gas much cheaper.

Cheniere LNG laid off 200 workers and is trying to re-sell their LNG on the world market. Meanwhile, BP just announced a halt in a proposed terminal in New Jersey, stating that for the foreseeable future, LNG is not a viable possibility. Even if the Jordan Cove LNG project is ever permitted, it may never be built.

Meanwhile, other parts of Oregon are attracting thousands of new stable, secure jobs in a booming industry. Unlike LNG, industries such as solar, wind and other renewables are growing quickly.

The city of Hillsboro successfully attracted Solar World, a German solar manufacturer that opened North America’s largest solar cell manufacturing plant that will create 1,000 new jobs. Vestas, the world’s top turbine maker, employs more than 300 in Portland and is adding another 200. Other companies moving to Oregon include Peak Sun Silicon, Sanyo Solar, the California-based Solaicx and XSunX, and Horizon Wind.  Rogue River Wind in collaboration with Portland State University has developed a radical new wind turbine, which has the potential to provide long-term family wage manufacturing, installation and maintenance jobs.

That Oregon is attracting all of this business is no accident. Our state has a business energy tax credit, which covers up to 50 percent of the cost of a clean energy project. In addition, the recent federal bailout of the financial industry extended the production tax credit, another incentive to develop clean energy. On top of that, we are just to the north of California, one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for renewable energy.

Where have our city councils, our port commission, the South Coast Development Council and our county commission been while the rest of the state has been creating stable, permanent jobs? Is an LNG terminal — something that will endanger homes, businesses and schools, and make us dependent on foreign energy — really the best they can come up with?

The clean energy boom is just beginning. It would behoove them to visit some of these communities and companies that are transforming Oregon into a clean energy hub.

lng of today is Like electricity was a 100 years ago NOT wrote on Nov 11, 2008 3:27 PM:

Terrence,

Electricity 100 years ago was a NEW invention that created new technology replacing candles for light & this Lng SCAM is old technology that is not needed for the future! Lng is explosive/risky, expensive, air polluter, that increases our foreign dependence on energy needs! Inventing electricity was necessary & this Lng SCAM is NOT! Weak desperate argument comparing the invention of electricity over 100 years ago with this Lng SCAM of today sorry!

Joe Six Pack apparently drank the entire package before he wrote. He is too eager to display his ignorance. It's sad that he won't spend ten minutes learning the facts, pro and con, about LNG.

Terrence wrote on Nov 11, 2008 8:50 AM:

When electricity came to Coos County about a hundred years ago, there was quite a few people who protested against it for fear of the unknown. The descendants (great-grandchildren) of these people are alive and well and protesting against LNG.

Mr E,

Sad but a pathetic fact, Big Oil runs this country & the rest are puppets, because solar/electric car technology has been around for awhile now (Had a successful 110 mile run traveling at 60 mph developed by a private citizen within 10 years ago, then shortly after bought out by one of the big companies & never heard again)! Clean, safe & inexpensive alternative energy sources are out there, but until the Government forces Big Oil to change, probably due to economic depression due to such high energy costs (Inflated due to emotional reasons Iraq war/Credit crisis, etc & not due to any storage in the world) or Global warming gets to a extreme level! This LNG SCAM is more of the same but worse due to it being more expensive/air polluter & more dependent on foreign countries!

The not in my back yard or not in my neighbors back yard group. Don't tell the truth! The land will steal be there and the Normans separate CO2 from NG before it becomes LNG! But if the World news paper or the Registered gard don't like it and they won't be truthful!! if you build it there will be jobs! but not as many as taking care of the OLD!

Mr E wrote on Nov 9, 2008 2:04 PM:

Notice that all of those clean energy jobs are going elsewhere? There are numerous reasons.

Sorry, we don't have the sun for solar, the consistent, sustained winds (or the space/terrain) for high-output wind facilities, or the tidal shifts/volume for tidal power. Geothermal is certainly not an option here, same with biofuel production. We don't have the educated work force (or the population) for the office jobs related to these kinds of work.

That doesn't mean I want LNG. That just means there are too many people living in a pipe dream (and, many of them probably voted McKeown... leading our city even further down the toilet, and driving jobs away). There are too many people who only say "we'll get the NEXT BIG THING" and then do absolutely nothing to help this area do that.

But, we'll have service jobs to appease the retirees!!! That's a lack of change that makes me want to vomit.

Hey SCOREBOARD wrote on Nov 9, 2008 4:45 AM:

Check the numbers, accorrding to a recent Newspaper poll there are 506 (48%) for this "SCAM" and 546 (51%) against this "SCAM".

Even though the Port was given a directive by Kulongoski to 'make something happen' here in Coos Bay, it is time to go back to the drawing board. Let's get the Port, SCDC, and concerned citizens in the thinking tank. We can be the port for E-Cars (ELECTRIC CARS) that are coming to Oregon. Win: Win - Longshoremen and tugs would be busy and would not be dangerous, nor take people's land. And develop wind turbine manufacturing, etc. We have a treasured NON POLLUTION area...let's go with it and make Coos Bay THE BEST CITY TO LIVE AND WORK IN THE WORLD!!! With solar manufacturing, etc, people will move back.. We have wasted a lot of time with the LNG to nowhere scam. Kick it to the curb.

Penny Z wrote on Nov 7, 2008 8:29 AM:

Although I have not followed this issue very closely I do have one comment to contribute. I used to work for one of the tug boat pilots over in Coos Bay, Charlie Yeats. There are many people who are able to successfully pilot ships into that port. It is extremely treacherous. I sincerely hope that the few people who can and do routinely navigate those waters have been allowed to tell some of their tales of terror attempting to bring ships safely into that port. The point being, it's just NOT a safe place to do such a thing long before it ever hits land!

Add Jeff Merkley to the scoreboard of not wanting lng for oregon wrote on Nov 6, 2008 8:16 AM:

Scoreboard,

Sorry your theory of Oregon wanting this LNG SCAM is false, by Jeff Merkley defeating Gordon Smith for Senate of Oregon. Jeff Merkley was totally 100% against this LNG SCAM for Oregon & didn't hide that fact prior to the election! I'm sure Jody has better things to do then gardening, but what will you do when this LNG SCAM leaves town & the USA is the question???

Common Sense wrote on Nov 5, 2008 10:09 AM:

What part of clean inexpensive energy sources as these don't you understand
A sensible approach (Obvious Bob Braddock shill):

1) Solar
2) Wave
3) Wind

Even if you get desperate, using natural gas from the Rockies is cheaper & less polluting then using LNG SCAM from foreign countries without having to take land from 400 Oregon citizens here!

A sensible approach wrote on Nov 5, 2008 8:51 AM:

People that are against this project are so mislead. This industry is worldwide, and among the safest due to the technology. You scream for ending our dependence on fossil fuels, yet don't provide immediate alternatives. Natural gas IS renewable, created daily in our landfills. Please wake up and see the benefits instead of giving in to the fear-mongerers.

Biggest scoreboard reads Obama wins by landslide including Oregon wrote on Nov 5, 2008 8:49 AM:

Scoreboard,

Obama has said he is against this LNG SCAM in Oregon & for the entire USA, due to creating MORE dependence on foreign countries for our present & future energy needs! Obama is the BIG scoreboard vs the poor & ignorant desperate people of this area SORRY! Great article & keep up the good work Jody!

P.S. Watch that 2005 Republican FERC Dictatorship SCAM law of LNG placements in the USA change soon also!

How many times will the citizens of Coos County allow The port and SCDC skin them in an other boondoggle? Remember the 12" pipeline? Where are the jobs? Mr. Opitz kas a good. Jody McCaffree would make an great replacement and wouls work as hard to bring real jobs to Coos county not these crazy schemes that benifit CEO's and the old ways of plundering the earth. Buy the future. Thank you, Jody

Scoreboard wrote on Nov 5, 2008 5:59 AM:

Hey Jody, how many local Anti-LNG candidates won last night? How many Pro-LNG or Neutral-LNG local candidates won last night? This time (yes, you have voted on this issue now over four times) the World Newspaper went so far as to have a matrix of where the candidates stood on the issues and specifically LNG. Check it out, candidates that were for LNG won big, those that said they still have an open mind, won big, those that said they were against it LOSS BIG. Put up or shut up, the people have spoken yet again. You lost at the Airport, you have lost at the county level (Whitty) and now at the Municipal level - twice. The only seat you have won was Bob Main and I think we all will all learn a lesson from that – got that federal land yet Bob? By the way he never outright said he was opposed to LNG exactly.

Can’t argue with the scoreboard Jody. Perhaps you should take up gardening or move on a new cause, because the voters have moved on without you.

Gene L wrote on Nov 4, 2008 10:36 PM:

How about Jody as a replacement for Ron Opitz, of SCDC. She has the vision and the drive. A nice first step in a long political career.

Holly wrote on Nov 4, 2008 8:52 PM:

Jody is right. I wish she would run for something!

B Falcy wrote on Nov 4, 2008 7:14 PM:

I agree completely with Ms McCaffrey and her views on this issue. At this time we should be changing our focus from fossil fuels supplied by countries that hate us and are our enemies. I have been to several meetings about this particular pipeline and all the answers we heard were deceitful or misleading. There is absolutely NO NEED for this pipeline, the fuel it will transport, or the scar it will produce in our landscapes across Oregon. Oregonians will not benefit with gas or jobs as stated by Williams Corp employees themselves. This is an abomination of power and the latest scheme to introduce eminent domain to take property and land from the public.

M Rohrer wrote on Nov 4, 2008 2:34 PM:

We do not need an LNG plant in this area. We all need to wake up to what a scam is being purpetrated upon our community by another big gas and oil company. They believe we are desperate for any kind of job and for any kind of industry, polluting or otherwise. Lets look for an industry that will bring real prosperity to our beautiful area, not the threat of potential hazards and decreasing land values.

ma jones wrote on Nov 4, 2008 2:30 PM:

Absolutely agree with NO LNG for the Coos Bay, North Bend communities. This is a fraud and a sham and is not needed here. We need clean sustainable and renewable energies that will be the wave of the future. No more pollution and dinosaur industry for our area. Come on people, were not desperate. Lets work together to attract good stable businesses that will enhance or property values and our community.

Good word describing this SCAM dinosaur industry not needed or wanted wrote on Nov 4, 2008 10:48 AM:

Foreign investors & Big business companies love poor & ignorant areas to con their way in such as Coos Bay & that's the ONLY reason they are here! Old saying apply's here, desperate people will do desperate things & this LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove is that thing will do nothing but collect a few extra tax dollars vs trashing a beautiful coast, pollute the air & take 80 foot wide section of land away from 400 Oregon citizens! LNG is a dinosaur industry dieing, due to the fact that is it expensive, pollutes & creating MORE dependence on outside countries for USA's fuel needs! Actually the LNG SCAM is BIG Oils tool to increase their profits due to the fact it is more expensive then natural gas coming from Canada & the Rockies of the USA! Solar, wave, wind are the future for clean inexpensive energy for our energy needs, but BIG Oil & foreign countries don't want that to happen, because it'll put them OUT OF BUSINESS!
