Want to get out to watch the election returns? Need a little analysis or play-by-play to explain all the politics to you?

There are several places around town to meet up with friends, debate among yourselves and watch election coverage tonight. Here are a few spots.

• Gooney’s Sports Bar, 3290 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay, 266-8815.

• Walt’s Pourhouse, 1880 N. Seventh St., Coos Bay, 267-5588.

• Coney Station, 2995 Broadway St., Coos Bay, 295-6948.

• Humboldt Club, 2056 Sherman Ave., North Bend, 756-6314.

• Benetti’s Italian Restaurant, 260 S. Broadway St., Coos Bay, 267-6066.

• Stray Katz Bar, 1088 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay, 888-4353, also will have its television sets tuned to national election coverage, starting around 6 p.m., said co-owner John Pundt.

Candidate hangouts?

John Pundt has a personal interest in local results, as he is running for Coos Bay City Council.

Those presently on Coos Bay council will have some business to attend to tonight before they can turn their attention to ballot returns.

There is a council meeting scheduled at 7 p.m. in Coos Bay City Hall. At least the incumbents will be there.

Hoping to rub elbows with other candidates as they anxiously await election results?

North Bend City Council incumbent Howard Graham said he has no set plans beyond staying home for election night, curled up around a nice warm TV. Candidate Mike Erbele also will be spending time with his family as he waits for potentially good news, and incumbent Frank Amatisto said he’ll attend the Republican Party election watch at the Pony Village Mall in North Bend before heading home. There, he plans to watch for results “in my Lazy Boy, in front of the television.”

The Coos County Courthouse should be a good place to stake out tonight, as many candidates opt to wait there to see election office vote counts.

College lesson

Southwestern Oregon Community College will host “Election 2008: History in the Making” from 7 to 9 tonight in Eden Hall on campus. Students will discuss with panelists the process by which voters elect presidents, as well as the politics, policies and issues being talked about by the Republican and Democratic presidential campaigns.

GOP, Dems at mall

Sen. Joanne Verger and Rep. Arnie Roblan are expected to attend the Election Night Watch with other Democrats, starting at 6 p.m. at the Pony Village Mall. And Al Pearn, who is running for Roblan’s seat in District 9, said he’ll attend a near-identical event with Coos County Republicans at the shopping center before going home to Florence, where he’ll turn off his radio, cell phone and any other form of communication until the morning.

“I’ve been disappointed twice before. I’m not going to stand around and be disappointed again,” Pearn said on Monday. “Frankly, I don’t think I’m going to be disappointed — I think I’ll win by a very narrow margin.”

Now that’s the spirit.

I'll be at Pony Village Mall right after the City Council/Urban Renewal meeting.
