The South Coast got swept out of the volleyball playoffs on Saturday, with all five area schools coming up short in their matches one round before the state tournaments.

North Bend put up a good fight against top-ranked Sisters in the Class 4A girls second round, losing 25-19, 25-11, 20-25, 25-19.

“The games were really pretty close,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “We were very competitive with them.”

Alexandra Mateski had 13 kills, 10 digs and three blocks for the Bulldogs. Haley Dunham added nine kills and 19 digs and Katie Banta had six kills, 24 assists and 12 digs.

“I thought we played pretty tough,” Willett said. “They were a very good team. They hit the ball at us the whole time.”

Fe Pledger had 14 kills for Sisters.

Meanwhile, at Florence, Marist topped Far West League champion Siuslaw in five games, 25-17, 26-28, 22-25, 25-21, 15-9.

McKenzie Mumpower had 45 assists to lead the Vikings. Shelbey McClellan had 21 kills and Jenna Hanslits added 13 kills. Tammy Flood had 16 digs.

“It was a bummer,” said Siuslaw coach Amy Peterson. “We struggled a little bit with consistency.”

Allie Rogers had 27 kills for the Spartans.

Douglas, which tied NorthBend for second place in the final league standings and won a playoff match to take the No. 2 seed for the playoffs, will be the only Far West League team at the state tournament in Eugene, after winning at La Grande on Saturday.

In the Class 3A playoffs, Coquille traveled across the state and just missed advancing to the tournament, falling at Vale 17-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-20, 15-12.

“The girls put up a great fight, and even though we didn’t get the win, it was an exciting five games,” said Coquille coach Troy Cooper, who is stepping down after the season. “I had more fun coaching that last match than any other I can remember.

“It was a nice game to end my coaching career on.”

At Gold Beach, Creswell topped the Panthers in three games, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22.

Marshfield fell at home to Mountain View in the Class 5A playoffs, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 (see story on Page B1).
