BANDON — Coos County investigators are hoping the public can help them solve an animal abuse case in which someone shot dead 42 sheep near Bandon.

Rich Vincent of Two-Mile Road found the decomposing bodies of his sheep on a neighbor’s property at the end of Morrison Road on Oct. 19. The sheep reportedly had crossed through a fence separating Vincent’s land from his neighbor’s.

The sheep were all killed by gunfire and left to bleed to death. They were “not nicely” killed, Animal Control Officer Rick Hoover said.

At least two of the animals were shot in the head. The rest were heavily decomposed. Several of the carcasses had been dragged around and there was evidence of bear activity, Hoover said.

While the occasional shooting of a single sheep has been reported, this kind of incident has never happened before in this area.

“Everybody was taken aback by this,” Hoover said.

Due to the extent of decomposition, a government trapper had to be called in to determine when the shootings actually occurred.

The shootings likely would be considered aggravated animal abuse, said Coos County sheriff’s Cpl. Jeff Grant.

“Somebody could see some pretty good jail time over that,” he said.

Hoover is urging anyone with information in the case to contact him at 269-2312.

I for one, wonder at the individuals who were responsible for writing and editing the article. It was one of the worse written, unclear items I have ever read. Maybe the paper should hire someone who understands grammer and how to put a story together. That said, how can 2 animals be shot in the head and the rest badly decomposed? Were they all shot at the same time? (very poor reporting). How long were they trespassing on the neighbor's property? If the owner fails to control his animals and they tresspass onto someone else's property, then he should be held responsible for the damage done by his sheep NOT being on his property. I really wish the paper would do a better job writing and editing story's. About all I get out of this rag is a laugh at how poorly it is controlled.

People who hurt animals often harm other people. The correlation between animal abuse and crimes against humans is real and must not be ignored. These perpetrators must be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Gez, get real. Way to show some obsessiveness off about the other side. What does the liberal left have anything to do with someone killing 42 sheep? Talk about "get real". Maybe you'll understand it better when put in some other terms. "42 pieces of someone else's property were destroyed". Is that better?

Where are America's priorities? Many of you ignore murders of your fellow countrymen and get all excited about sheep. Thge liberal left has very misguided priorities.

I saw this on the news shortly after it happened and they interviewed Mr. Vincent. It was a very sad, sad story I was in tears when it was over. If I remember it correctly they were all ewes and to make matters worse if that is possible they were pregnant. I certantly hope to God that they catch these sick predators and charge them to the fullest extent of the law. There is absolutly no excuse for such a masacre.

Does the neighbor have an alibi? While it seems like he/she'd be an obvious suspect, why does this article fail to mention - either way - the status of the neighbor?

If someone could shoot a passive sheep standing in a field what else could they do? This person needs to be caught and now!

This kind of crap sickens me. How can anyone with half a brain, do this to harmless, Defenceless animals. Shame on the person or persons who did this. I hope you are caught and given what you deserve.! How would you like it if it was you and somebody shot you? You wouldn't like it. You should spend time in jail. "SHAME ON YOU"!!!!!!!!!

Why did it take so long for the owner of the sheep to notice they were missing - how many acres are we talking about here.
