The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man from a fish-processing vessel 25 miles from Heceta Head near Florence on Friday.

According to a Coast Guard press release, a dispatcher in Astoria received a call from the 376-foot vessel Alaskan Ocean, reporting that a 28-year-old man had accidentally severed his left ring finger at around 7:30 p.m. 

An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from the Coast Guard air facility in Newport responded to hoist the man from the boat.

The helicopter crew flew the 28-year-old to the Newport Municipal Airport where emergency medical service personnel took him to a nearby hospital.  No other injuries were reported. Air Facility Newport is part of Coast Guard Group North Bend.

The vessel was off the coast fishing for whiting. It’s owned by Glacier Fish Co. out of Seattle.
