Far West League: Siuslaw nabs spot in playoffs

Siuslaw took the final playoff spot for the Far West League by beating visiting South Umpqua 28-12 on Friday.
The Vikings will host Henley at 7 p.m. Friday in a Class 4A first-round game.
In the tiebreaker for third place against South Umpqua, Siuslaw got scores from four different players and led the entire way after Matt Tholen scored in the first quarter.
After Ryan Smedley scored for South Umpqua, Siuslaw quarterback Jacob Mitchell connected with Joe Swesey on a 74-yard touchdown pass.
Triton Crane pulled the Lancers within 14-12 in the third quarter, but Siuslaw pulled away on touchdown runs by Trevor Smith and Mitchell in the fourth quarter.
Mitchell had another big night, completing 10 of 18 passes for 170 yards and also rushing for 177 yards on 21 carries.
Crane had 155 yards on 29 carries for South Umpqua.
Bruins win
Brookings-Harbor beat Sutherlin 22-21 to avoid a winless season.
Dustin Paradis scored his third touchdown for the Bruins with 2:20 to go in the game and added a two-point conversion to give the Bruins the victory.
“They deserve it,” Brookings-Harbor coach Jim Keys said of his players.
Paradis accounted for all the Bruins’ points, scoring in the second quarter on a 42-yard run and twice on short runs in the fourth quarter.
“We just rode the big horse,” Keys said of his sophomore running back.
Nick Bradley had Sutherlin’s first two scores and Tony Guillen scored to give the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead in the fourth before the final touchdown by Paradis.
The win was a sweet way to end for the young Bruins, who had many sophomores in the lineup and three freshmen who made key plays Friday night.
The two teams finished with matching 1-4 league records.
