Myrtle Point held off Reedsport 20-13 Friday night in the Sunset Conference finale to dash the playoff hopes for the Braves and Coquille.
Myrtle Point’s win put Bandon in the playoffs despite the Tigers losing in their finale to Gold Beach.
The Braves got a touchdown by Keelan McDuffy on the first drive of the game, and led until the second quarter, when Scott Clark had a 10-yard scoring run for Myrtle Point.
The Bobcats went up 14-7 in the third quarter when Sean Andy scored on a 15-yard run and caught the conversion pass from Kyle Davis.
The Braves then marched down the field on a 10-minute drive, scoring early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Josh Palmer. But the Braves went for two points and Ryan Hamilton knocked down the conversion pass.
Daven Cagley added a 16-yard run and the Bobcats kept the Braves from getting close to an equalizing score.
“Reedsport came out playing with their backs against the wall because they had to beat us,” Myrtle Point coach John Marquez said. “Our boys stepped up and played well defensively in the second half.
“The kids didn’t want to lose the game.”
Myrtle Point will play No. 2 Grant Union in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
“I’ve always said to be the best you have to beat the best,” Marquez said. “Will it be David and Goliath all over again? We’ll see.”
Red Devils win finale
Coquille sent coach John Breuer into retirement with a big win Friday night, beating Glide 65-26 in the season finale.
Though the Red Devils tied Bandon for fourth place in the Sunset Conference, the Tigers advanced to the playoffs by virtue of the tiebreaker.
Sophomore Joe Harris had 278 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns for the Red Devils. Buddy Parlier added three touchdown runs in his final game for Coquille. Richard Venable had 126 rushing yards, including a 76-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring. Zac Smith and Derrick Yarnell also scored for the Red Devils.
The Red Devils rolled up 557 yards of total offense, while Glide had 300 yards.
“The offense really started clicking last week,” Breuer said. “It’s a great way to end your season.”
And, in the case of Breuer and his top two assistants — offensive coordinator Keith Lewis and defensive coordinator Jeff Cochran — their careers as coaches in Coquille.
“It’s going to be tough to step aside,” Breuer said, but he added that after five years as head coach and hours and hours of work in the offseason, it’s time to take a break.
“It will be good to get some young coaches in here,” he said.
Panthers win again
Gold Beach scored 10 touchdowns against visiting Bandon as the Panthers geared up for the Class 3A playoffs with a 70-14 win. Gold Beach had already clinched the Sunset Conference title last week.
Fullback Travis Moore had 164 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Panthers in the win, while Knox added 152 yards rushing and three touchdowns as Gold Beach scored 35 points in each half. Knox also had a 77-yard fumble recovery for a TD, as well as TD punt returns for 60 and 78 yards en route to 480 multi purpose yards.
Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said it wasn’t his intention to run up the score.
“I played my JV team the whole fourth quarter... I don’t like beating a team like that. I apologize,” said Swift. “I certainly did not mean to embarrass them, I was trying to get a team ready for the playoffs.”
Gold Beach hosts Warrenton at home next week in the first round of the state playoffs. Swift said the team still has areas were it can improve.
“Believe it or not, we still have a lot we can work on,” said Swift.
Bandon, which got two touchdowns by Jimmy Mack, travels to Regis next week after earning the No. 4 seed in the Sunset Conference.
