COOS BAY — Get ready to put the Indian summer behind us and get ready for a drenching. It’s going to rain — then rain some more.
The National Weather Service said two low-pressure systems, one about 400 miles offshore and another that will deepen as it comes ashore — will move across the West Coast between now and Monday. They will bring with them some big seas, wind and a lot of the wet stuff that makes Oregon’s coast so famous.
Up to 2 inches of rain could fall in the Coast Range this weekend, the service said. That rainfall also could translate to snow at some of the higher elevations and bring snow levels down near pass elevations.
“The first in a series of storm systems will approach the region tonight causing south and southeast winds to increase across many areas during the day on Thursday,” the service said.
The Weather Service also has issued a variety of warnings ranging from small craft advisories to gale warnings over the ocean waters between now and Monday.
“Hazardous seas will build by early Saturday morning to combined seas building to 7 to 11 feet in the inner waters and 16 to in excess of 20 feet in the outer waters through Saturday afternoon with a dominant period of 8 to 10 seconds,” the service said in a 2:45 a.m. special marine warning. “Heavy southwest to west swell will move in Saturday night and persist through Sunday night, bringing combined seas of 14 to 17 feet with a dominant period of 11 to 12 seconds.”
Temperatures will be colder during the day, but should be somewhat warmer during the nights, in the high 40s to low 50s.
