High School Recap: Panthers advance in playoffs

Gold Beach earned a trip to the Class 3A volleyball playoffs by beating visiting Myrtle Point in the Sunset Conference playoffs Tuesday.
The Panthers now meet Coquille tonight to determine the league’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds for state. The winner hosts a playoff game Saturday, while the loser must travel to Vale.
The Panthers swept the Bobcats, 25-13, 25-17, 25-15.
Molly Hockema had 10 kills, two aces and three blocks for Gold Beach. Lily Miller, Melissa Smith and Katherine Zuber combined to add 12 more kills and setter Rendall MacLaurie had 23 assists. Sydney Hadley had four aces.
Sam Sanders had 13 digs and three assists for Myrtle Point, while Erin Fullerton had nine kills and five blocks. The Bobcats’ season ended with the loss.
BOYS SOCCER
Pacific edges Lancers
Pacific scored in the 65th minute to edge visiting South Umpqua 1-0 in the season finale.
David Sanin scored for the Pirates on an assist from Jonathan Everest as Pacific finished the season 5-5-2, in fourth place in the league. The Lancers finished 5-7-0.
GIRLS SOCCER
Bruins top Devils
Brookings-Harbor beat visiting Coquille 6-0 to cap the regular season with an unbeaten record.
The Bruins led 2-0 at halftime.
Brookings-Harbor finished 12-0-2 and is the Far West League’s top seed for the playoffs.
Coquille, which had just two seniors and two exchange students, along with several younger players, including many who had not played before, showed great improvement during a winless season said, co-coach Sharon Usselman said.
Brookings-Harbor hosts either Portland Adventist or Oregon Episcopal in the second round of the playoffs Tuesday.
Lancers top Glide
South Umpqua got two goals by Kristina Hale to beat visiting Glide 2-1 and finish the regular season on a winning note.
The Lancers are the Far West League’s No. 2 seed for the state playoffs.
UVC wins
Umpqua Valley Christian beat Sutherlin in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A playoffs on Tuesday.
The match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation.
UVC hosts Sisters in the first round of the playoffs Saturday.
