The Harvest Moon Pie Contest and Auction will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, in Coquille.

Contestants can submit two pies in each of the two categories — apple or pumpkin. One pie will be used for judging and the other will be auctioned. Pies may be entered in the competition from 10 a.m. until noon at the community center’s small auditorium. Judging will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and the auction will start at 4.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category. The winner of the apple pie category will win a Sharp microwave donated by Henry A. Schroeder & Sons. Proceeds will benefit the Coquille Chamber of Commerce. The community center is located at 115 N. Birch St.

This event is sponsored by Coquille Valley Hospital, U.S. Bank and Bicoastal Media.

Winemaker’s Dinner  at The Mill

Nov. 9 — The Mill Hotel- Casino’s executive chef Dan Catanio and winemakers from across the region have teamed up to bring you the Winemaker’s Dinner at The Mill. The event began in September with Giradet Wine Cellars of Roseburg. The dinners are scheduled for every other month.

On Nov. 9, the wines of area winemaker Terry Luce will be featured along with Chef Catanio’s cuisine. The dinner begins at 4 p.m.

The five-course meal starts with Oregon coast salmon and lobster roulade, citron beurre blanc to be paired with Hawk’s View’s 2004 Chardonnay.

The second course is Quail Veronique — a breast of quail, stuffed with seedless grapes, pink peppercorns and shallot herb butter; sauce bigarde. The wine is 2005 Mortal Zin.

Oregon Blackberry Wine and Oregon Cranberry Wine will be paired with the third course of prawns chinois; warm spinach salad with hot pancetta dressing.

An intermezzo of raspberry mint ice will preceed the main course of Beef Filet Bourgogne; with duchesse potatoes and roasted squash cup filled with ratatouille. A taste of Donna Rosa Red and 2006 Baco Noir will accompany the main course.

The meal finishes with Profiteroles filled with white chocolate ice cream and dark chocolate sauce. Oregon Loganberry Wine will go with the dessert.

Tickets for the event are $55 and can be purchased at the KoKwel Gift shop at the casino.

The featured winery for the dinner in January will be Spangler Vineyards of Roseburg.
