Craft sale

Hearts and Hands will hold a Christmas crafter’s guild sale at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church  from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church. Baskets will be raffled off of handmade items, with proceeds going to the Coos County Animal Shelter.

Paranormal teachings

Dr. Ann Fillmore and team members will provide training in paranormal research at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The training will include technical help with cameras, audio, EMF and other gear to an on-site investigation with a choice of three different guaranteed haunted indoor sites, as well as two outdoor sites. Event participants will meet in Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Eden Hall.

Dinner will be provided by the Culinary Institute on campus. The cost is $40 per person, and pre-registration is required. Doing the Lindy

MarLo Dance Studio in Bandon will host beginner’s Foxtrot and Lindy Hop lessons for six weeks beginning Saturday. A Salsa workshop will also be held on Sunday, Nov. 9. For dance times, rates and more information, call 347-4616 or visit http://www.marlodance.com.

Mushrooms and birds

The South Slough National Estuary Research Reserve will offer two different programs Saturday.

South Slough Birding will be from 8 to 10 a.m. The cost is $1 per birder and binoculars, spotting scopes and field guides are provided.

Naturalist Chuck Holbert will guide a trip of foraging for edible mushrooms from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants should wear sturdy boots and clothing, bring a sack lunch, pocket knife and plastic bag for collecting. Participation is limited to 60 students, so folks are asked to register early. The cost is $20 per person and free to FOSS members.

Red Cross training

The Oregon Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a variety of health and safety training for youth, adults, healthcare providers and instructors. All course fees cover the cost of materials and the maintenance of Red Cross equipment and facilities. Registration and pre-payment is required for all classes:

n Babysitter Training (ages 11-15) $40 — Saturday, Nov. 1 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

n CPR PRO-Life Care Center $55 — Saturday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

n CPR/AED for Adults (with first aid) $40 — Wednesday, Nov. 5, 12, 19, 20, 24 and 25 from 6 to 10 p.m.

n Adult/Child CPR/AED and infant CPR (with first aid) $47 — Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

n CPR/AED Adult Review $25 — Tuesday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m., and Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

n First Aid (with CPR/AED adult) $40 —  Thursday, Nov. 6 and 13 from 6 to 10 p.m.

n Standard FA w/CPR/AED adult $40 — Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Contra dance

The Sixes Grange will be hosting a contra (barn) dance and chili feed at 6 p.m. Saturday. The band Willow Creek will entertain with old-time fiddle and country music, while Stacey Rose does the calling.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 18. The chili dinner includes corn bread and a drink, is $5 per person.

All proceeds will benefit the grange building repair fund. The Sixes Grange is four miles north of Port Orford. For more information, call Jane at 332-9891.

Christmas giving

Operation Christmas Child is a world relief organization that donates shoe boxes full of Christmas gifts to poverty-stricken children throughout the world. Life Care Center in Coos Bay will serve as a drop-off point for donated items through Saturday, Nov. 15. Financial donations can also be made by checks made out to Samaritan’s Purse, with OCC on the memo line. For more information, call 267-5433.

Christmas wreaths

The Lakeside Women’s Club is now taking orders for Christmas wreaths. The wreaths are 22 inches in diameter, and are $18 each. The wreaths will be delivered to the recipients between Nov. 20 and 25. For more information or to place an order, call Chrysta at (541) 982-2485.

Theme needed

The Coos County Fair is looking for a theme for the 2009 fair. Ideas may be sent through Monday, Nov. 17, and will be decided the following day.
