Brookings-Harbor ran off six straight goals in the second half to clinch the outright Far West League boys soccer title with a 6-1 victory at Coquille on Monday.

The Bruins had entered the regular-season finale with a one-game lead on North Bend. A loss and a North Bend win over Sutherlin would have resulted in a one-game playoff today. As it turned out, North Bend tied Sutherlin 1-1 Monday, so the Bruins (11-1-0) ended up with five more points than North Bend (9-2-1) in the final standings.

Coquille (6-5-1) already was locked into third place heading into Monday’s match, but the Red Devils hoped to gain some momentum for their Saturday playoff match against Philomath or Newport.

The Red Devils played great for a half, and led 1-0 on a penalty kick by Ryan Dannels in the 15th minute.

“We are a fantastic one-half team,” Coquille coach Randy Lucas said, referring to a number of matches when the Red Devils played great for either the first or the second half, but not both, and ended up losing, including their 4-3 defeat to North Bend last week after holding a 3-1 lead late in the opening half.

“We play some very good soccer, but we don’t play a full 80-minute game and the better teams in the league do,” Lucas said.

The Bruins dominated the second half Monday.

Anthony Babb had four goals, while Linden Loren and Thomas Spratt also scored for Brookings-Harbor.

“We’re a pretty strong team,” said Brookings-Harbor coach Gabriel Anaya. “We know we can control the game. We have to create scoring opportunities.”

That’s what the Bruins did in the second half Monday.

By virtue of their league title, the Bruins have a first-round bye Saturday and then host a second-round match on Tuesday against a team to be determined Saturday.

Coquille, meanwhile, has the first-round game Saturday, which will be played on the high school football field. A win in that match, against Philomath, would mean a second-round game at No. 2 La Salle.

Lucas told his players to keep their heads up and look ahead.

“This is the end of one season, now it’s the beginning of the next,” he said. “The next is the (state) tournament.”

Admission for Saturday’s match is $6 for adults and $4 for students. The time for the match has not yet been decided.

Battle of Bulldogs is draw

North Bend and host Sutherlin played to a 1-1 tie in the regular-season finale Monday.

Sutherlin got a goal by Luis Rast in the 24th minute, with an assist from Jose Juarez.

North Bend answered with a goal in the 55th minute by Jonathan Fall, with an assist by Sean Jany.

North Bend will open the playoffs on Tuesday at Central.

Sutherlin tops NB

Sutherlin beat host North Bend 2-0 on Monday to secure a tie for third place in the final league standings.

Sutherlin and Umpqua Valley Christian, which beat Douglas, both finished the regular season 9-4-1 and play today to determine the No. 3 seed for the state playoffs. The loser of the match will see its season end.

Brookings-Harbor and South Umpqua have the league’s top two seeds for the postseason.

Sutherlin’s goals Monday came from Rozalyn Patrick and Stephanie VanDeHey, both in the first half. Patrick assisted on VanDeHey’s goal.

North Bend finished the season 5-8-1, alone in fifth place.

“It’s been a good season — one we hope to build on and continue climbing the ladder so we can still be playing at this time next year,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood.

Monarchs edge Douglas

Dani Buechley scored the only goal of the match on a free kick to lift Umpqua Valley Christian and force today’s tiebreaker match with Sutherlin.
