Southwestern wrestlers open with dual wins

The wrestling team from Southwestern Oregon Community College started the season with three wins on its home mats Saturday.
The Lakers beat Yakima Valley, West Hills and Lassen by wide margins, losing just eight individual matches during the day and having 13 different wrestlers post at least one win.
Southwestern beat Yakima Valley 26-9, getting a pin by David Laird at 174 pounds and major decisions by Sean Connolly (133 pounds) and Zolboo Enkhbayar (165). Dustin Maxwell (125), Mihial Kalugin (157), Jarrod Kamstra (197) and Jason Troxell (285) also won their matches for the Lakers.
Southwestern topped West Hills 40-10. Brendan Connolly (141 pounds), Enkhbayar and Tim Hester (197) won their matches with pins, while Laird had a major decision. Allen LaGrange (184) and Brandon Davidson (285) also won decisions and the Lakers won two matches by forfeit.
In their final match, the Lakers topped Lassen 26-13. Anibal Vazquez-Munoz had a pin at 184 pounds for Southwestern, while Brendan Connolly had a major decision. The Lakers also got wins by Sean Connolly, Jesse Chunn (149 pounds), Kalugin, Laird and Kamstra.
Southwestern now is off until grappling with Clackamas on Nov. 15 and competing in the Pacific Open at Forest Grove the following day. Southwestern’s next home match is on Friday, Nov. 21, against North Idaho, with a noon start.

Volleyball
Southwestern’s volleyball team hit a stumbling block on its journey toward the NWAACC tournament, falling to host Clackamas in three games Saturday, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14.
“Clackamas is a very good team and we need to play at the top of our game to beat them,” Southwestern coach John Speasl said.
The Lakers had a hitting percentage of just .104 on attacks and passed at a rate of just over 2.0 on a 3.0 scale in serve receive. Both areas need to be much better to beat a strong team, Speasl said.
But he quickly added he is confident the Lakers will bounce back.
“We have a very good squad and a month to get ready for the championships,” he said.
The loss to Clackamas wasn’t without bright spots for Southwestern.
“Kristine Kosinski had the best match of her season,” Speasl said. “She really played hard.”
Kosinski had a .400 kill efficiency, with seven kills and just one hitting error, two solo blocks and an assist block.
Katie Jolliffe also had seven kills for the Lakers, while setter Jessica Bond had 20 assists. Jolliffe had 10 digs and Taylor Scott had eight.
Southwestern has played five straight league matches and a crossover tournament away from home, but now has a little time off before hosting league-leading Chemeketa on Nov. 7 and Linn-Benton on Nov. 8.
The Lakers are tied with Clackamas for second in the NWAACC South Region standings at 5-2. Chemeketa is 7-0.
Cross country
The Southwestern women finished third — just two points behind runner-up Clackamas — in the NWAACC South Region championships on Saturday.
Lane swept the team titles, led by a pair of former Siuslaw runners, but several Southwestern runners had personal bests.
“The kids did real well,” said Southwestern coach Dan Neal.
Francesca Frasier covered the 5,000-meter course in a lifetime best 19 minutes, 19 seconds to finish third, while Kendra Nelson was 11th in 20:30 and Emily Damon 15th in 20:56 for the Lakers.
“We look to have a strong performance in the NWAACC (championships),” Neal said. “I think the women could be in the top six.”
Steven Sanders placed seventh to pace Southwestern’s men, finishing the 8,000-meter course in 27:16. Willy Bennett also had a personal best, finishing 17th in 28:26. He was one spot behind teammate Andrew Scott as the Lakers placed fourth in the team race.
Siuslaw graduate Leah Twombly won the women’s race in 18:46. Travis Stevens, another former Viking, was second in the men’s race in 26:18, nine seconds behind Matt Moncur of Clark.
The NWAACC championships will be held on Nov. 8 at Vancouver, Wash.
