Letters dated July 21 to Coos County Assesor Bob Main and Human Resources manager Steve Allen, and another to Main on Sept. 3, describe problems Kay C. Roach had with Assessor-elect Adam Colby’s treatment of her starting in April.

Main and Roach talked four times between April 28 and June 4 about the situation, according to the July letter.

“I have spoke with you four times about getting this problem resolved and nothing has happened,” Roach said in the letter dated July 21. “The hostile work environment still exists.”

The letter said on Roach’s fourth conversation with Main, he suggested the problem would handle itself or otherwise she should take care of the matter herself.

“Your comment was Adam would self-destruct or adjust. You suggested that I come to the thank you picnic on Sunday June 8th and have a chat with Rosie (Adam’s wife) about the problems in our office so she could talk to Adam and maybe get through to him. You also suggested that Bert (Roach’s husband) and I sit with Adam and Rosie and that I should be really, really nice to Adam.”

“I was disappointed with our conversation on June 4th and the lack of resolving this problem,” she wrote.

“For the last two months our office has been  a hostile work environment. You are choosing to let it continue. ...

A second letter dated Sept. 3, listed several more occasions in August in which Roach contends Colby verbally abused her, including one incident in which Main was present.

“Adam Colby has been verbally abusing me (which I have told you many times) and others in out office for the last 5 months. You have chosen to let this abuse continue and you have chosen to let Adam treat us like this. Why are you not doing anything about it?”

I agree with The World that, hopefully, Main won't address his upcoming Commissioner responsibilities the same way he apparantly handled (or better yet didn't handle) this situation.

I heard that Kay C. Roach has followed the County Policy Manual and she has also contacted the union.

maybe because the human resources director is just a pawn like all the other department heads, and take their instructions from our wonderful commissioners... who strangely enough won't even confirm the issue of who suspended Colby, or even whether or not he is in fact suspended... sounds like typical bs to me.

Why not just save us the money and get rid of all the department heads, since nothing happens anyway without a commissioner telling someone to do it.

My question is why Ms. Roach go to the union? Isn't that one of the reason's to have a union? Why is she going straigt to an attorney? Money? There is a process that she could have gone throught. Whey didn't you Ms. Roach?

"What are we paying for a Human Resources Manager for"

It's been generally accepted through out both corporate and government that people go into HR positions when can't fit into other positions....Don't blame me, I'm only pointing out *facts*

Are you out of your mind? Would you really allow or expect an employee to handle a situation in this manner? What if "Rosie" defended her husband and there was further complications? And Mr. Main will be a county commissioner? That's scarey....we already have one that does what he wants and puts the county's name in jeopardy.

If the County has a Human Resources Manager, and the Assessor's position is held by a Department head, then why would, or should, any employee being harassed need to take steps outside the work place in order to seek a resolution to that problem?

What are we paying for a Human Resources Manager for, and what is the point in having a Department head in place who does nothing?

I think I gotta lie down!
