Mediation training

Basic mediation training will be offered to all community members interested in becoming a mediator, or in gaining skills to help others manage and resolve their own conflicts. The training will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and  Nov. 6 and 7. Training qualifies a volunteer to mediate for Coos County Circuit Court and interpersonal disputes within the community.

Class size is limited, and registration is required. The tuition is $200 per person, which covers all training materials, lunches and snacks. $100 of that tuition is refunded back to those who mediate eight cases for Neighbor to Neighbor before Nov. 1, 2009.

Tuition is $300 for those who are taking the course for personal development, with no intention to mediate in the courts. For more information and to register, call Char Luther at 751-9666 or 266-0806.

Anti-oppression

The Women’s Safety and Resource Center will present lectures on anti-oppression training at 6 p.m. Thursday at the center, 1681 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay. Topics include disabled oppression, dynamics of suicide and intervention and same sex oppression.

Christmas crafts

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will be holding a Christmas crafter’s guild sale from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church. Baskets will be raffled off of handmade items, with proceeds going to the Coos County Animal Shelter.

Christmas sale

A Christmas collectibles sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at College Park Community Church, 2548 Newmark St. in North Bend. Items included are for the Furry Friends Therapy Dogs fundraiser. For more information, call 266-7440.

Pie auction

The Harvest Moon Pie Contest and Auction will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, in Coquille.

Pies were collected in September but will be judged Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. The auction starts at 4 in the community center, 115 N. Birch St.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category. The winner of the apple pie category will win a Sharp microwave donated by Henry A. Schroeder & Sons. Proceeds will benefit the Coquille Chamber of Commerce.

Firefighter reunion

The Coquille Firefighters are inviting all past and retired Coquille Firefighters, along with their significant others, to a reunion dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Coquille Firestation No. 1. For more information and to register, call 396-2232.

Swing time

The Coos Historical & Maritime Museum will host a Big Band dance and salute to veterans from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the North Bend Community Center. The dance will feature the music of the Frosty West Swing Sextet. The dance is open to the public. Admission is $10 for CCHS members and military veterans, and $12 for non-members. Tickets are available at the museum and the door.

The evening will include light refreshments, and beer and wine will be available for purchase. Swing-era attire is encouraged. For more information, call 756-6320.

Show Rehearsals

Dress rehearsals for the Little Ole Big Band show, “Anyswing Goes,” will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3; from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4; and from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Little Theatre on the Bay.

Computer workshop

A free public basic computer workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 3, in the Cedar Room of the Coos Bay Public Library. The Bay Area Senior’s Computer Club is sponsoring the event. No registration or membership is required. For more information, call 266-9714 or 269-7396.

RSVP now

Men and women are invited to the Bandon/Port Orford Women’s Connection Country Fair and Silent Auction dinner from 6 to 8 p.m.  Monday, Nov. 3, at the VFW Building, 55382 Bates Road in Bandon. The cost is $12 inclusive. Reservations must be prepaid. Make checks payable to Stonecroft. Participants should include names of who is attending, indicate a steak or chicken dinner preference and mail to Rosalee Coble, P.O. Box 401, Port Orford, OR, 97565. Business value

The Southwestern Community College Business Development Center and Hough MacAdam & Wartnik, LLC, are teaming up to offer a workshop to give business buyers and sellers the tools to assess a business’s worth.

“The ABCs of Valuing Business” will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the BDC in North Bend. The cost is $25, which includes materials. For more information or to register call 756-6778.

Dance lessons

The Sets in Order Square and Round Dance Club will meet for square dance lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Lincoln Elementary School in Coquille. Jim Harris and Coleeta Quigley are the instructors. Round dance lessons will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at the same location. Instructors will be Jim and Denise Harris.

Flu shots

Southern Coos Health District will provide free flu vaccinations to adults in Bandon on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drive-through service will be available.  Anyone age 18 and above is eligible to participate providing they are not sick that day, do not have allergy to eggs or a component of the vaccination and have never had a serious reaction to past flu vaccinations.

Food handling

Coos County Public Health will sponsor food handler classes at 1 p.m.  Tuesday, Nov. 4, and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in North Bend. Another class will be held in Myrtle Point at the OSU Extension Building at 1:30 p.m.  Thursday, Nov. 6. Those who pass the exam and pay fee  will be issued a food handler card.
