Two students from Coquille Martial Arts placed in the recent Battle of the Champions tournament in Salem.

Geoffery Perry, a second grade student at Lincoln Elementary School, placed second in weapons with his karma form. He also competed in traditional forms and sparring.

Tasha Napier, a former Coquille resident now living in Eugene, placed third in the 15-17 age group in traditional forms.

“She’s been practicing on her own since moving from Coquille as she works toward her adult black belt, coming to Coquille when she can to train at the school,” said instructor Karen Saxton. “It takes a certain amount of dedication to do this.”

Club members will travel to Medford next month for Chip Wright’s Champion Karate Tournament.

On Dec. 6, the Coquille school will host its fourth tournament, offering awards for grand champion forms and best all-around martial artist in both adult and youth divisions, in addition to regular awards for the top three in each division.

The tournament will benefit Coos County youth who cannot afford martial arts training by helping provide money for scholarships. Any business or individual interested in donating to the scholarship fund can contact http://www.ahopefultomorrow.org or Coquille Martial Arts for more information.
