Marshfield beat host Willamette to secure at least a tie for the Midwestern League volleyball crown.

The Pirates won 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17 to improve to 8-1 with just Thursday’s home match with Springfield remaining on the schedule.

“It was definitely a good win to have,” said Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel. “It’s good to have control of our own destiny going into Thursday.”

Nikki Gross had 43 assists and four aces for the Pirates. Kara Young had 14 kills, four aces and 21 digs. Jessica Hockema had 18 kills and Natalie Caffey had 10 kills.

The Pirates again were without libero Brittney Young, and had Katelyn Richmond at the position.

“Katelyn did a good job again tonight,” Montiel said. “We hope to have Brittney a little bit Thursday night.”
