Disabled Veterans meet at library
The Coos County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 38 will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Coos Bay Public Library. Refreshments will be served. This association is non-profit. For more information, call Gene Wood at 759-4316.
Lecture on ‘Dynamics of Abusers’
The Women’s Safety and Resource Center will hold a lecture on the “Dynamics of Abusers,” (INOKA and Turning Point) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. Coastal conference
The fourth-annual Heceta Head Coastal Conference, with the theme “Oregon’s Ocean: Change and Consequences,” will be held Oct. 24 and 25 at the Florence Events Center.
A recepation will be held at 5 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. buffet. Marine biologist Dr. W.J. Ballantine will speak at 7 p.m. on “The New Zealand Experience.”
Ballantine will deliver the keynote address, “Marine Reserves: The Need for Systems,” at the Saturday luncheon.
Ballantine will join with nine other speakers chosen for their expert background on ocean policy who will serve on three panels addressing topics including Ocean Climate Change, Building an Ocean Legacy and the Salmon Closure. A final lecture will explain the consequences of Sea Level Rise Due to Climate Change.
In addition to Saturday’s all-day program, Ballantine will also speak Friday evening, combined with a reception and light buffet. He will present the New Zealand experience in establishing some of the first marine reserves in the world.
A marine biologist and grassroots activist, Ballantine, 71, has been successfully promoting the establishment of “no-take” marine reserves, both in New Zealand and internationally. These unprecedented reserves are widely considered to be a critical means of protecting marine resources that are quickly being depleted around the globe, a press release said.
Working with the University of Auckland’s Marine Laboratory at Leigh, Ballantine recognized the need for marine reserves where habitat and marine life would be left totally undisturbed by people. Ballantine was very active in a six-year fight to enact New Zealand’s Marine Reserve Act in 1971, a press release said.
As Ballantine continued to advocate the creation of additional reserves, acceptance of the idea gradually grew. Today there are 31 marine reserves in New Zealand, and it is government policy to develop a system representing all marine ecosystems and habitats. New Zealand's reserves are being watched closely and are providing a model for protection of critical marine resources, a press release said.

LTOB haunted house
The Little Theatre on the Bay will be putting on haunted houses as a fundraiser for the ADA bathroom project. The cost is $3 per person for a first visit, and any additional visits will be only $1. The haunted house is scheduled to run until Nov. 1:

The Coos Bay Public Library will host two performances of Bob Eaton’s “Halloween Magic Show” at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the library. Eaton will present a fast-paced magical comedy act, filled with fun and surprises, including Harry Potter and friends. For the past 30 years, Eaton has been a popular entertainer at libraries, fairs, community events, schools and other venues throughout Oregon and Washington, a press release said.
The program is free and arts and crafts will be available, as well as refreshments.
