A fire in a kitchen got out of control Sunday evening in Coos Bay.

According to a Coos Bay Police log, a fire was reported at about 5:24 p.m. at 3040 Leaf Terrace. The Coos Bay Fire Department responded with two engines and six firefighters, but when firefighters arrived they discovered the fire had already been put out by the homeowner, Bernard Hoffman.

Battalion Chief Mark Anderson said the blaze that started while cooking on the stove spread to the overhead cabinets. Firefighters ventilated the area by opening windows and doors and blowing smoke out with a fan. They checked the attic for more damage and to verify the fire was extinguished.

“From our viewpoint, it was very close to being a really big, bad problem,” Anderson said.

Usually there is more damage from water than fire in these kitchen fires that the CBFD puts out...
And you are right, he did sound like he missed out on something.

Thank You CB Fire wrote on Oct 22, 2008 8:22 AM:

Congrats to the homeowner for protecting his home and doing so without causing himself injury.

Thank you to Coos Bay Fire for the quick response and service to this homeowner (checking for extension, ventilating, etc)

good job wrote on Oct 22, 2008 12:40 AM:

any fire is bad, but it couldnt have been that bad if it was out before the fire dept got there... the chief makes it sound ohhh sooo bad, like he is jealous they didnt get to do anything, he should just be thankful they didnt have to do anything. that is a good thing when one can get it under control... kudos to the homeowner for his quick response.
