Medical marijuana gardens worry Clackamas County

PORTLAND (AP) — An increase in medical marijuana gardens in Clackamas County is being welcomed by patients and advocates, while neighbors are alarmed and police are confused about how to handle it.

From January through July, the number of medical marijuana cardholders in the suburban Portland county jumped 23 percent, from 1,207 to 1,481, according to the Department of Human Services Oregon Medical Marijuana Program.

Statewide, officials have seen a similar 23 percent increase, from 15,927 to 19,646.

Even though the figures suggest more people getting the help they need, they raise concerns about more people abusing legal loopholes, more criminals preying on legal growers, and more problems for police officers and courts.

Paul Stanford, founder and director of the national nonprofit Hemp & Cannabis Foundation, said that law enforcement officials and the public are gradually accepting the benefits of medical marijuana.

“Across the board, we’re seeing increasing support, and it’s so important,” Stanford said. “There are so many people who need medicine, but they don’t want to break the law.”

A marijuana garden that is tended cooperatively by several patients and caregivers who supply marijuana to cardholders who can’t grow their own has produced a great deal of surplus marijuana that Stanford provides free and in strictly controlled quantities to patients in Clackamas and other counties.

“Of course, the real solution is to legalize (marijuana),” he said. “But for the most part, it’s a positive change in understanding.”

Yet the experience of cardholders tends to vary, depending on where they live. In Clackamas County, police contend some cardholders are abusing their rights by growing too much marijuana.

A June report by Oregon’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program — a federal grant program administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy — states that the medical marijuana law has been consistently violated and is a major barrier to effective enforcement and prosecution.

From 2006 to 2007, the number of plants police seized jumped from 77 to 1,013 plants growing indoors, according to program figures.

During that same period, the number of outdoor plants seized jumped from 178 to 494, according to Chris Gibson, director of Oregon’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.

Yet advocates such as Stanford say police often seize plants growing legally and that the claim that medical marijuana growers frequently abuse the system is only a campaign to curtail medical marijuana.

David Langshaw, a Milwaukie-area resident, has for four years been a cardholder and grown marijuana for himself and others.

Yet he knows that could mean law enforcement could show up on his doorstep at any time.

“People here have to watch out for that knock-and-talk stuff,” he said. “I know my rights, but I worry about all those other people out there who think they have to show everything and answer all those questions.”

I believe it way past time to legalize. Stop spending big money trying to stop this PLANT. Come on people its a plant. That has not killed anyone. Please stop beleaving everything our government tells you. Because they don't always tell the truth. Damit

I spent the last two years caring for a 76 year old man with cancer raging throughout his body. He was reluctant to take pain medications because he didn't want anybody to call him a drug addict, so he suffered until I spoke with his doctor and Hospice about the situation. In the final stages, when he was vomiting all the time he asked me what I thought of his trying marijuana. Again, his concern was that he didn't want to cause trouble or be labeled a drug addict.

Thank God wrote on Oct 23, 2008 6:23 PM:

I know a few elderly people who have used mmj and it has extended their life and enhanced the quality of life because pain and suffering is reduced.

These people are not harming anyone. It is sad that some people want to inflict shame and judgement upon them for improving their health.

We should be thanking God for creating such a wonderful medicine. What are you going to trust - The creation of God (mmj) or man (addictive and harmful medications).

I don't see how someone could argue that Marijuana which is a natural substance that has been around forever is bad and prescription drugs that are man made chemical compounds made in a lab are good. Nature=Bad, Chemical Engineering=Good?

Linda wrote on Oct 23, 2008 11:18 AM:

Oh yeah the only concern for this is just Clackamas County. Not Coos, give me a break!

Linda wrote on Oct 23, 2008 9:43 AM:

Well you hate people need to read my what I wrote a little closer. Because first off, I voted for the measure and people are miss using it and ruining it for the ones that do need it. And don't go there with I don't have any knowledge, my husband can't breathe because of smoking MJ and I have relatives that are miss using it, so back off. I also had a dying friend that couldn't eat without smoking it. I'm talking about the miss users and the doctorthat just give it to whoever has an owy.

hmm.. feel sleepy and eat a twinkie and forget you're in pain for a couple of hours or take a cocktail of pills that has awful side effects (for which you take more pills). Doctors just prescribe the medication, they don't necessarily know anything more about them than you or I do. Fatal drug interactions are enough of a reason to quit filling yourself up with pills.

Why was this article even ran in the world newspaper ? This concern ??? is in Clackamas county. And why are people so mean and want people to be in pain ? Linda ???

I am glad its here to help wrote on Oct 23, 2008 8:19 AM:

My mom has alot of problems that cause her a lot of pain. She doesn't ask for mmj b/c she works and doesn't feel comfortable. If she did she could get of the 3 pain killers that she takes every day to get by. I don't think my mom could grow it if she did so I am glad someone is there to help others.
Or maybe they could get better health care so some of her health problems could be fixed hhhmmmm

Mike wrote on Oct 23, 2008 2:19 AM:

Linda,
I don't wish my degenerative athiritic chronic, as in 24 hrs a day/night, pain in my spine, lumbar, knees on anybody, but if I could once again take a walk w/o morphine, oxycodone and inflammatories that have given me an ulcer, I just might wish you a 'taste' of it on you w/your ignorant post. I can't smoke MJ daily due to COPD and emphysema, so I don't use it as much as I wish I could and still rely on the pharmceutical opiated PK's for relief. But until you are in one of our painful shoes, you will probably still have your ignoranct opinion and hope you keep it, if your health does deteriorate to the point of needing morphine related PK's just to get out of bed. You can then be a DR qualified Junkie, w/the same anti-social attitudes the real ones exhibit, just as you did in your post. Better to be pissed off than pissed on, as my old Gunnery Sgt used to tell us when he gave us an order that didn't 'sit well' w/most of our company of Marines.

If we lagalized MMJ, we would have three times more DEA agents available to investigate hard drugs.
My mother defeated her cancer with the help of medical marijuana.

Please let sick poeple enjoy life, heal up , and for heaven sake, leave them alone so they can get better.

Albert wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:55 PM:

Please leave us alone , and stop threatening to take pain management away from the sick poeple. Just Leave us alone , so we can heal. Respect the vote, fallow the law.

GOD BLESS THE OMMP!

nick wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:43 PM:

MMJ works, and helped me quit 4 years of morphine, by supressing much of the withdrawl. Its good to have pain control be be awake, and out enjoying hiking and fishing again.
The poeple voted for MMJ and it passed. i hope that, One day, the government will respect the vote of the poeple, and stop threatening the sick and crippled. Please leave us alone to heal!
God bless the OMMP and all involved! May the sick be allowed to heal in peace without the threat of the government taking our pain meds away.

Nick wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:35 PM:

Thanks to medical marijuana i quit my taking my morphine anf fentanyl, which sedated me so much i was sleeping all the time. Marijauna made it easy to quit smoking cigs, drinking and a 4 years of taking opiates, becuase it suppressed much of the withdrawl.
MMJ is good medicine and effective medicine that works for me.I rarely get stoned anymore, but the pain fades away when i vaporize (i dont smoke).
I enjoy life so much more when i can get out of the house and do some hiking and fishing, as those activities were just too painful for me to do before. Doctors tell me im healthier than ive ever been since my accident.

Thankyou THCF! God Bless the OMMP and all involved! May the law allow all the sick Patients to heal in peace.

Big G wrote on Oct 21, 2008 1:42 PM:

Michael,
Obviously you have never had to take prescription narcotics for a prolonged period of time. If you had, you would know how troubling the side effects can be for an individual. If you have used them successfully for an extended period of time, then you are one of the lucky ones. I have arthritic chronic pain, and my use of narcs caused me serious problems. Not only was an increasing dose needed for the relief, but I was drowsy, surly and UNHAPPY. It was also expensive. My use of MM has given me relief that is predictable, and safe. I rarely get "stoned" anymore, but my pain levels have been reduced by several points. I am able to function despite my arthritis.

Glad to know that you're such an expert on drugs there Linda. If it wasn't for Medical Marijuana I probably would have wasted away from Crohn's disease by now.
I'd rather smoke Marijuana any day than be addicted to oxycontin.

US Deaths A year
Alcohol=100,000
Nicotine=490,000
Marijuana=O

"Dude where do I sign up" is right!

We know more than doctors about what medicines they should prescribe.

Even if a doctor graduated from medical school, has done the research, and believes this medicine will be good for a patient, in America we have freedom. Freedom to tell doctors that WE know better than they do.

Amen, "Dude where do I sign up"! Doctors don't know what best for their patients, WE DO!

Dude Where Do I Sign Up wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:42 AM:

I wuv my Owegun! I need to check with my doctor to see if he'll sign me up. I have a continuing problem with corns on my toes, Mary Jane will make the corns go away, I just know it. LOL

Michael wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:19 AM:

Yeah! This is absurd! I mean, if people are in chronic pain for a bad knee, like Linda wrote, they should get on opiate medicine like oxycontin or vocodin, which everyone knows is perfectly harmless and non-addictive.

Everyone knows marijuana is harmful when used by adults and opiates are not. Duh!

Get informed wrote on Oct 21, 2008 9:13 AM:

First of all, alot of people that benifit from medicle marijuana, are not able to grow for themselfs. Just where are they going to get it from ? I believe Mr.Langshaw is doing a someome a big favor, by growing for them. Second, why shouldn't someone be able to use the medication of their choice ? I for one, do not like the pills, my Doc likes to keeps me doped up with. Not to mention all the nasty side effects. Third, you should look up the recent, and not so resent studys that marijuana kills cancers cells. COME ON PEOPLE WAKE AND GET INFORMED. Stop listening to 1937 goverment propaganda.

Here We Go wrote on Oct 20, 2008 8:50 PM:

I say Mr.Langshaw should "NOT" be allowed to grow this garbage for anyone else, but himself. Limit him on his plants and anything more than that he should be arrested. He should be charged with possesion with intent for sales. Make those people grow their own. I think Mr.Stanford is making a profit off of this garbage that should be destroyed.

Linda wrote on Oct 20, 2008 4:27 PM:

I think the doctors that pass the licenses out to people that aren't dying or in pain need to lose their license. I mean come on already, people are getting licenses for a bad knee. I think the feds should investigate the ones with the licenes too if our police aren't going to. There's people out there that have the license that are more capable of working than I am or are working and driving. It pisses me off.
