ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The NFL fined Broncos cornerback Dre’ Bly $20,000 on Friday for inappropriate remarks about officials after Denver’s 24-17 loss to Jacksonville last weekend.

Bly was agitated over an illegal contact call he drew in the third quarter, plus a pass interference call on Broncos safety Marlon McCree in the waning moments of the game.

The Broncos have caught their share of breaks from the officials this season, most notably on Ed Hochuli’s blown call in a 39-38 win over San Diego, and Bly hinted that things were evening out.

Melvin gets extension with Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Doug Melvin will get a 3-year contract extension as the general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, but the team also said Friday that Dale Sveum is no longer under consideration to become manager.

Sveum was promoted from his coaching position and served as interim manager after Ned Yost was fired with 12 games left in the regular season.

The Brewers reached the postseason for the first time since 1982, but lost to Philadelphia in four games in the opening round of the playoffs.

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said the team reached a “significant milestone” by getting to the postseason, “and this could not have been accomplished without the efforts of Doug Melvin and his staff.”

Among the major moves this season was the July trade that brought pitcher CC Sabathia from Cleveland to Milwaukee, where he became the most dependable member of the rotation, going 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts.

Turnesa holes out in PGA tournament

LAS VEGAS — Marc Turnesa holed out from 159 yards for eagle on the par-4 18th hole to offset a 17th-hole double bogey and maintain a share of the lead Friday in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Tied for the first-round lead, Turnesa followed his opening 62 with a 64 to match Matt Kuchar at 18-under 126 — one off the PGA Tour’s 36-hole records for total score and relation to par. Kuchar had his second straight 63 at TPC Summerlin.

Zach Johnson, the other first-round leader after winning the Texas Open last week, was third at 17 under after a 65 in sunny, calm conditions.

Lang earns share of lead at LPGA Classic

KAPALUA, Hawaii — Brittany Lang shot a 1-under 71 for a share of the second-round lead with Suzann Pettersen in the inaugural Kapalua LPGA Classic.

Lang stayed aggressive despite the breezes that frustrated many players, birdieing Nos. 11 and 13 to match Pettersen (72) at 4-under 140.

The morning groups enjoyed calmer conditions with the tradewinds again picking up in the afternoon. Early rain softened the slick greens at the Bay Course and the overcast conditions provided some relief from the sun.

Annika Sorenstam followed her opening 77 with a 70 to make it to the weekend.

Making one of her last competitive appearances before leaving the tour at the end of the year, Sorenstam needed an eagle to get to 3-over 147 — the cut was at 4 over.

Bean leads Administaff Small Business Classic

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Andy Bean hit all 18 greens in regulation and shot a 7-under 65 to take the first-round lead in the Administaff Small Business Classic.

The 55-year-old Bean, the Regions Charity Classic winner in May, had a one-stroke lead over Jay Haas and Joey Sindelar in the Champions Tour event. Sandy Lyle, Lonnie Nielsen, Brad Bryant and Wayne Grady opened with 67s at The Woodlands Country Club.
