Youth football league has successful first year.

Players, families and coaches celebrated the first season of the South Coast Youth Football League with a festive final day last weekend.
The league for fifth- and sixth-graders finished its five-week schedule with three games at Marshfield High School.
On the final day, the Coos Bay Vikings beat the Coos Bay Jets 20-6, the North Bend Broncos and Coos Bay Raiders tied at 28 and the North Bend Steelers beat the Coquille Chiefs 8-6.
Off the field, cake was served and a giant slide was brought in for the kids.
“We just made a fun day out of it,” said Quintin Hall, one of the league coordinators.
About 200 fans attended.
“It was a great season,” said Hall, one of the people who toiled more than a year to get the league started. “We’re looking forward to next year.”
Myrtle Point is expected to have a team next year, and local officials are trying to recruit teams in Reedsport and Bandon. In addition, Coos Bay will have at least one more team, Hall said.
“I’m pleased that we got the number of kids that we have out,” Hall said.
Among things to improve for next year are a few rules issues and finding a way to get more high school kids involved helping the league, he said.
“Overall, our biggest goal was to get kids playing, and we accomplished that,” Hall said.
Only one player dropped out, and that was because he lived out of town and practice times were inconvenient, Hall said. In addition, only a few minor injuries were reported.
