Community Sports, Fast Break for Oct. 18: North Bend swimmer Heaney named Scholastic All-American
By Staff Reports
Saturday, October 18, 2008 6:15 AM PDT
North Bend High School junior Rachel Heaney was named this week to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team for the 2007-2008 school year.
Heaney was among 974 athletes, including just 25 from Oregon, to make the list.
Heaney has close to a 4.0 grade-point average, and was honored because of that and a fast time she swam in the 1,500-meter freestyle in a meet in Corvallis earlier this year.
Masters Clinic
Adult swimmers who want to improve their pool performance are invited to come to the next masters swim clinic at Mingus Park Pool.
The clinic will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 25. Run by former Marshfield swim coach Ralph Mohr, the clinic will focus on turns, especially the flip turn.
The clinic also will include a review of all the strokes, with individual attention to make swimming easier.
Swimmers should be able to swim at least one length of the pool in both freestyle and backstroke.
The cost is $5, or $2 for those with a Mingus Park Pool pass.
For more information, see the bulletin board at the pool or call Mohr at 269-1565.
Grapplers practice
The South Coast Grapplers wrestling club holds practices from 6 to 7:30 every Tuesday and Thursday in the Southwestern Oregon Community College wrestling room, located in the Rec Center on campus.
