State Sen. Jeff Kruse and his challenger Eldon Rollins have a different future in mind for their district and state.

Each brings a different background to the table as well in their campaigns for the Oregon Senate District 1 seat.

Rollins, D-Coquille, makes it very clear this is the first time he has run for a state office. Kruse was first elected to the Oregon Legislature in 1997 when he took a seat in the House of Representatives. The Roseburg Republican has been in the Senate for four years.

Maybe it’s best to mention where they agree before drawing the line between them.

When it comes to marine reserves, Kruse and Rollins agree there isn’t enough science to justify creating marine reserves — or ocean space — where activities such as fishing would be limited or prohibited.

“There needs to be a reason beyond just to lock up the ocean,” Kruse said.

Neither candidate is opposed to the concept of marine reserves, but first they want science to provide a good reason for them.

“We do need to look into whether they are absolutely necessary, “ Rollins said.
