Sunset Conference: Bobcats rally to beat Glide in overtime thriller

Myrtle Point rallied to force overtime and then won the game on a run by Sean Andy in the second extra session, beating Glide 20-14 Friday night to virtually clinch a playoff spot in the Sunset Conference.
The Wildcats led 6-0 after a 40-yard touchdown pass from Will Hissong to Drew Vickery in the second quarter, but Myrtle Point’s Nic Canaday scored in the final minute to force overtime.
The touchdown was set up by a double pass on a fourth-and-12 play. Quarterback Kyle Davis threw an overhand lateral to Scott Clark, who eluded a Glide defender and hit Canaday for the first down.
Clark scored for the Bobcats in the first overtime, but Hissong answered with a 25-yard run to tie the score.
The Bobcats stopped Glide in the second overtime and Andy scored the game-winner on an end-around.
“I’m pumped,” said Myrtle Point coach John Marquez, whose team improved to 4-1 in league play.
The Bobcats had done nothing on offense until the final 1:30 of the game, when they marched 65 yards to tie the score.
“(The players) were saying, ‘We’re not going to lose this game,’” he said. “The bench was fired up. I’m pumped up for these kids. Their resilience is phenomenal.”
The Bobcats are tied for second with Cascade Christian, their foe next week, and have a two-game lead on Glide, Bandon and Reedsport with two to go. Glide and Bandon play each other next week and Reedsport plays top-ranked Gold Beach.
If the Braves lose, the Bobcats will secure a playoff spot no matter their outcome against Cascade Christian. Myrtle Point finishes the season against Reedsport.
Bandon outlasts Coquille
Bandon collected 355 total yards of offense and Mike Bennett, Cody Carney and Buster Webb had interceptions as the Tigers rolled to a 26-14 win at home over Coquille.
“This is the team we’ve been trying to get to show up for the last few weeks,” said Bandon coach Motts Thomas of the now 2-3 Tigers. “We’ve been trying to get a team that shows up to play in the first half.”
Bandon went into halftime up 14-6 on a 14-yard touchdown run from Jimmy Mack and a 17-yard TD pass from Connor Jackson to Buster Webb that was tipped up by Max DeVillers and pulled down in the end zone by Webb. Coquille scored on a 5-yard run from Rex Dixon.
The Tigers continued to score in the second half, going up 26-6 on a 31-yard TD pass to Mack, and a 15-yard TD run from Mack.
Thomas was most happy with his team’s defense.
“We knew we had to go after these guys, and defensively that’s what we did,” said Thomas.
“This was our best defensive effort yet.”
Coquille scored again in the waning seconds of the game on a 34-yard TD pass from Heston Altenbach to Joseph Harris.
Mack led the Tigers with 125 yards rushing while recovering from a concussion suffered last week against Reedsport and a lingering virus.
“What a stud,” said Thomas of Mack.
Panthers win big
Travis Moore scored five touchdowns and Garrett Wolford added two more as top-ranked Gold Beach defeated host Rogue River 63-14 on Friday.
The Panthers punted the ball just once and got a big night passing and running from quarterback Jeffrey Knox.
“We threw the ball a little bit more than we normally do,” Gold Beach coach Kevin Swift said.
Challengers win
Cascade Christian rolled to a 32-0 halftime lead against host Reedsport and went on for a 39-0 victory.
Ben Joffer scored on a 20-yard fumble return and 30-yard pass from Colton Cochran to give the Challengers a quick 14-0 lead. Tyler Stickler later added two touchdown runs.

Elks top Cruisers
Elkton pulled away from Powers with a 22-point second quarter to beat the host Cruisers 54-14 Friday.
Brent Whipple and Mackenzie Smith had three touchdowns each for the Elks.
Powers got both its touchdowns from George Lewis on a pass from Cameron Perreault and a 95-yard kickoff return.
The Cruisers fumbled five times and also threw three interceptions.
“We had our chances but didn’t capitalize on them,” said Powers coach Nick Gonzales. “Elkton converted on the chances they got.”
