South Umpqua handed North Bend its first Far West League loss, making the visiting Bulldogs pay for seven turnovers in a 47-33 victory.

Ryan Smedley had four touchdown passes and Triton Crane ran for 144 yards and scored three times for the Lancers, who moved into a tie for second with North Bend. Both teams still must play league-leading Douglas.

The teams traded scores through the first two quarters before South Umpqua got two late scores to go up 33-19 at halftime.

“It was a rough one,” said North Bend coach Rick Taylor. “I think we were maybe a little flat. We just didn’t come out with the same sort of voracity that we normally do. They had a good game plan. They executed and did a good job.”

South Umpqua got an early field goal from Alex Hunt before North Bend’s Jake Lucero gave the Bulldogs the first of two leads with a 4-yard scoring run.

Smedley hit Austin Truitt for a touchdown, but Cameron Seiger responded with a 49-yard touchdown run for North Bend.

The Lancers went up 20-13 on a touchdown pass from Smedley to Ky Schoonover and another field goal by Hunt, but Cody Harden scored for North Bend, pulling the Bulldogs within 20-19.

That’s when South Umpqua pulled away.

Smedley had a 47-yard touchdown pass to Crane and then hit Austin Marsh with a 31-yard scoring pass with just 3 seconds to go before halftime.

Crane had two rushing touchdowns to stretch the advantage to 47-19 before North Bend got late touchdowns on a run by Seth Johnson and a TD pass from Dalton Iveans to Cody Harden.

The Bulldogs had won six straight after losing to Marshfield in the season-opening endowment game. But South Umpqua coach Kevin Hubbard said his players “played the game of their lives.”

North Bend now needs to win at Brookings-Harbor Friday to have a chance to tie Douglas for the league title the following week.

“We need to take care of business,” Taylor said.

Vikings beat Bruins

Jacob Mitchell had four touchdown passes and Siuslaw beat visiting Brookings-Harbor 26-6 Friday night for the Vikings’ first league win.

Mitchell connected with Joe Swesey for two scores and Joe Thompson and Rivers Gage-Hunt for the other two. He finished the night 13-for-15 passing for 222 yards with an interception.

Dustin Paradis had 25 carries for 135 yards and scored Brookings-Harbor’s touchdown in the second quarter, cutting the Siuslaw lead to 13-6 at halftime.

Trojans blank Sutherlin

Douglas rushed for 252 yards and shut out Sutherlin at home 17-0 to move to 3-0 in Far West League play and in sole possession of first place.

Sky Woods racked up 110 yards on the ground for the Trojans, and opened scoring in the game with a second-quarter, 30-yard touchdown run. Bryson Norton also had a 5-yard TD run for Douglas, and Tim Urista connected on an 18-yard field goal.

Douglas out-gained Sutherlin 298 yards to 203 in the game.

Brian Andry had 85 yards rushing for Sutherlin.
