Friday, October 17, 2008 11:34 AM PDT

Coquille moved into third place in the Far West League boys soccer standings with a 3-1 win over host Douglas on Thursday.

Ryan Dannels scored in the seventh minute, with an assist from German Ferrer, and added a goal in the first minute of the second half, converting a long pass from Cole Waddington. Andreas Esparza had his first goal of the season in the 59th minute on an assist from Ferrer.

Sean Brookins scored for Douglas in the 63rd minute.

Coquille coach Randy Lucas said the Red Devils had a good team effort, especially on defense with fullback Armando “Tito” Rangel out with a sprained ankle.

“Daniel Muntifering and the rest of the defense stepped up to hold strong against an attacking Trojan front,” Lucas said.

The Red Devils improved to 5-3-1 on the season, just in front of South Umpqua, which is 5-4-0.

Bruins win again

Linden Loren scored three goals and Dylan Grover added two as Brookings-Harbor beat host Sutherlin 5-0.

The Bruins improved to 8-1-0 to keep pace with North Bend atop the league standings.

Jacob Starfelt scored Marshfield’s goal in the 76th minute with an assist from Adam Alexander, but Jimenez added another goal for Willamette.

Marshfield finishes the season at home against Springfield on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Far West League

North Bend ties Glide

Glide and visiting North Bend played to a 1-1 tie Thursday night. Nicole Medford opened scoring for the Bulldogs in the eighth minute when she slipped the ball past Glide’s keeper as it rolled along the endline.

“It was one of those you’d like to have back,” said Glide coach Dana Croll.

The Wildcats evened the count in the 68th minute, though, on a breakaway goal from Clara Gilman to put the final at a 1-1 draw, despite Glide outshooting North Bend 24-5.

“We just couldn’t get the ball in the goal,” said Croll.

Douglas edges Coquille

Douglas got the only score of the match on an own goal by Coquille in the 24th minute, beating the Red Devils 1-0 Thursday.

“It was an even match,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman. “Shots were 11-11. We had several shots that were right there and we couldn’t put it in.”

He added the match was the most physical Coquille had been involved in.

The match was the final home contest for Coquille and the Red Devils’ best shot at a victory. Douglas improved to 2-9 and Coquille fell to 0-11.

Before the match, seniors Cheyenne Sherbondy from Coquille and Brittany Love from Myrtle Point were honored, along with exchange students Mia Toskala, Mareike’ Langenbach and Lisa VanGaal, the team’s manager.

Bruins win

Brookings-Harbor beat Sutherlin 1-0 to move into sole possession of first place.

Sonia Gonzalez scored the only goal in the 47th minute.

The Bruins improved to 9-0-2. Brookings-Harbor has a tough stretch next week, visiting North Bend for a night game Tuesday and then hosting South Umpqua the following afternoon.

Brookings-Harbor and South Umpqua tied in their first match this year.
