NORTH BEND — Two women have applied for an opening on the North Bend School District’s board of directors.

One likely will be appointed on Thursday, Oct. 23, when the board holds a special meeting to interview them to fill the open Zone 1 seat. Zone 1 applicants must come from areas north of the McCullough Bridge.

On Monday, the board met with applicant Jeanne Hanson Currie, a North Bend High School graduate with grandchildren at North Bend and Coos Bay schools. She said she is a member of a Coos County pioneer family, is the secretary of the North Bend Booster Club and has worked as a 4-H and Cub Scout leader.

The other, Mirian Zomerschoe, was on vacation at the time and was unavailable for interview by board members. She sits on The Lighthouse School Board, a charter school within the district, has three children attending North Bend schools, and was raised in Holland.

Superintendent B.J. Hollen-steiner said the decision to appoint a new board member is dependent on whether Zomerschoe can attend the next meeting.

The position opened Sept. 1, when Dave Ellingson resigned. He cited health issues and a desire to move to southern Texas to be closer to his wife’s family. The person who takes Ellingson’s spot of the dais will have the position for a limited time. She will have to run for election in May 2009 to keep a seat on the board.

The Oct. 23 meeting will be held immediately following a 3 p.m. work session for the board at the North Bend District Office, 1913 Meade St. in North Bend.
