State Rep. Arnie Roblan, far left, and state Sen. Joanne Verger talk about the new airline providing flights to Portland at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport on Wednesday. They were attending a ceremony celebrating the new carrier service.
Passengers who stepped off the SkyWest’s United Express plane Wednesday afternoon from Portland were treated to personal greeting and a walk down a red carpet to the terminal at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend.
Area residents, airport officials and politicians attended a gathering at the airport to celebrate SkyWest’s new commercial air service north.
Partnership was the key to acquiring the flights between the North Bend and Portland airports. Speakers, including Coos County Airport District Chairman Mike Lehman, Sen. Joanne Verger, D-Coos Bay; Rep. Arnie Roblan, D-Coos Bay; and Daniel Clem, director of the Oregon Department of Aviation, thanked the city of Portland for pledging $213,000 to help guarantee revenue for the first year of the flights and the Port of Portland for its donation of $100,000 for marketing the flights.
“Today is a time we are so appreciated,” Verger said. “At a time we needed help, we got that help.”

I am so sick and tired of all you people saying the taxpayers payed for the airport. The money for the airport came from facility taxes paid for by passengers. It is about $3 per person that flies into or out of our airport and you know what? If you haven't flown out of this airport then you have not paid for ANYTHING!
As far as people showing up late and not being allowed to check in.... There is a 30 minute cut off for passengers checking bags. All airports have a cutoff time. Portland's is 45 minutes. Horizon would leave the counter early or just walk away from passengers.
The reason bags were bumped off a plane along with passengers.... the runway that was being worked on is the ONE runway the airport has that allows a plane to take all passengers and bags. Ask the port why they allow construction when planes are attempting to take off.
i'm still really confused as to why a new airport was needed. while it may not have been the hilton, didn't the old one serve us fine? And all it did was cost us taxpayers money so the old facility could be freed up for the private bandon dunes visiting jets.
Funny - only happened one day for one flight due to construction on runway that caused them to have to lighten load by kicking off passengers. Issue resolved and has not happened since.
Or what about the lady that was three minutes late for her flight and TSA was still checking bags when Sky West wouldn't let her board. They had to call NBPD to come down she was so upset. Isn't this the third time this week someone has been a few minutes late and you not let them board...oh and NOT ONE FLIGHT HAS LEFT ON TIME THIS WEEK!!! MESSED UP!
