Marshfield High School’s first invitational volleyball tournament is so big it will be held at three different locations in the Bay Area.
The Marshfield Invitational will be played Saturday, with a 16-team varsity tournament at the high school, a 16-team junior varsity tournament at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon and a 16-team freshman tournament at North Bend High School.
“I’m real excited about it,” said Marshfield athletic director Greg Mulkey, adding that he had intended to hold just a varsity tournament, but the demand was so high that it grew, as several larger schools said they would send all three teams to Coos Bay.
The event begins at 8 a.m. at all three sites, with each of the 16-team tournaments being divided into four, four-team pools. Within each pool, the four teams will play a round-robin format, two games against each foe, with the top two teams advancing to a championship bracket and the third and fourth teams going into a consolation bracket. The brackets will be played in a single-elimination format, with the matches being best two-games-out-of-three.
Admission for the whole day is $5 for adults, $3 for students and $1 for students with their student body cards, and is good for all three sites.
The invitational includes seven of the 11 South Coast high schools. Only Brookings-Harbor, Gold Beach, Pacific and Powers aren’t included.
Marshfield, North Bend and Siuslaw will have their varsity, JV and freshman teams in the tournament. Myrtle Point, Coquille, Bandon and Reedsport will have their varsity and JV clubs. Myrtle Point will play in the varsity bracket and Coquille, Bandon and Reedsport will have their varsity teams in the JV bracket and their JV teams in the freshman bracket.
“We want to get those local teams in,” Mulkey said.
In the varsity tournament, Marshfield will be in the Purple pool, along with Sutherlin, Siuslaw and Dallas. North Bend will be in the Gold pool with North Salem, Crater and Hidden Valley. Those two pools will play their matches in the Pirate Palace.
The Black pool, playing in the West Gym, includes South Medford, Liberty, Douglas and Myrtle Point. The White pool, which will play in the Harding Gym, includes Grants Pass, Century, Tillamook and Valley Catholic.
Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel is looking forward to playing a tournament without traveling. The Pirates go to Roseburg, Medford and Ashland for other tournaments each fall.
“I’m excited that it’s a weekend that we don’t have to travel and we still get a lot of volleyball play in,” she said.
Montiel also likes the variety of schools in the event.
“It’s a little bit different competition than we’ve seen going to the Roseburg, Medford and Ashland tournaments where we’ve seen the same competition a lot of the time,” she said.
In addition to the Class 6A and 5A schools, Siuslaw, North Bend, Douglas and Tillamook have solid 4A programs and Valley Catholic is ranked in the top 10 for Class 3A.
Officials hope the tournament is a success.
“We’ll see how it goes this year,” Mulkey said. “Hopefully everyone will have a positive experience.”
Montiel said the invitational is good for the entire community.
“I think it’s good for the community to get lots of people here,” she said. “It brings lots of outside people into the community and into the motels and businesses.”
Mulkey said the expanded tournament would not have been possible without the Boys & Girls Club and North Bend High School offering their facilities.
“There’s no way we could do it without their help,” he said.
Concessions will be available throughout the day at all three locations.
“We have a lot of good support,” Mulkey said.
In addition to all the help from volunteers, several area motels are helping provide rooms for the visiting teams for Friday night, including the Red Lion, the Best Western, Motel 6, the Coos Bay Manor and the Edgewater Inn.
