Builders want an expo center

NORTH BEND — A local association of builders says construction of an expo center just might be the missing piece of the economic puzzle for Coos County.

Kim Lehmann, the executive officer of the Home Builders Association of Southwestern Oregon, presented a proposal to the North Bend City Council on Tuesday, asking the council to provide a letter of support to help move the idea forward.

“I don’t know why we would hesitate to offer our support,” said Mayor Rick Wetherell. “This is an exciting proposition.”

After showing a video that described the many hotels, restaurants and outdoor activities one can find in the county, Lehmann said an expo center is the one thing that’s needed to bring all these offerings together. She speculated it could draw thousands of visitors and convention-goers for a variety of events from home shows to motocross and rodeos. Expected to be a green-energy building, it would cover 40,000 square feet and seat 5,000.

The group is looking at three sites for the facility, but didn’t reveal them at the meeting. Lehmann said the association has committed about $25,000 for the project and believes it needs nearly $12 million. Funding could be achieved via grants and other sources.

Put it on the reservation since they have all that room and money.

Maybe they should have saved one of those old schools they closed down for it.

Let the Mill Casino fund it and build it, they have all the money in town. Use that good piece of land for something.

Well said citizen. I would much rather see our tax dollars go to building a better foundation here. We are leaving our children helpless and dummed down and full of debt because of these greedy people. It would be nice to see something like this but right now would be a waste of money. The gap between middle and upper class is getting larger and larger.

Coos Bay Resident wrote on Oct 20, 2008 1:40 PM:

I think if these builders want an expo center they should put up the money themselves. Why should the citizens of Coos Bay/North Bend have to pay for this? How about the North Bend city councilors paying the the Expo Center out of their pockets or use their buisnesses as collateral?

This is funny wrote on Oct 19, 2008 6:31 PM:

Wow... a building expo... don't you have to have new construction to facilitate a building expo? Yes, there should be one, just like a Home Depot. I am sure the old timers of Coos Bay/ North Bend will welcome it with open arms... Just like they welcome everything else that will bring business into the area! Good luck with that. HAHAA

You cant move forward without a strong foundation. I wish we had all day kindergarten I am sure that $12 would help with that.

Huh wrote on Oct 19, 2008 11:42 AM:

If this center gets build they will be forced to charge top dollar to see the monster trucks, motocross or whatever to help recover the expense of building this place. How many of the 5,000 seats are going to be empty if it costs $15 to $20 a person to get in? Like everyone else is saying there are empty buildings all over town already. If you want to live in a big town move to one, there are plenty out there.

Maybe they can find some cheap property on the North Spit next to the LNG terminal... People would come from everywhere and plop down handfuls of dollars just to see a working gas terminal... Especially one that can sell Liquefied Natural Gas 20% cheaper than our domestic natural gas.. Lets get this right.... Destroy this beautiful bay and make it look like a refinery in Oakland and use that to attract the masses to our wonderful coast... Only in Coos Bay

the home builders are losing business with the mortgage bust. Now they want our tax dollars to support another pie in the sky.
You guys have made money in buckets in the last years with the boom. Now, why don't YOU invest in the future and finance it yourself. If it's so profitable, where's the problem? If it's not profitable I do not want it on my taxes either.

Industry wrote on Oct 18, 2008 12:43 AM:

Personally, I think times will necessitate the re-thinking of our strict environmental debacle and allow some decent industrial applications into the area. At that time, having a multi-use facility is a good idea.

$12,000,000.00 should be going to local law enforcement. It should be going to educate our kids about how meth ruins lives. Let's work on the fundamentals of a good community.

To Living Life Forward wrote on Oct 17, 2008 4:24 PM:

No matter how well-thoughtout your plan is, I don't want to see a $12 million expo center here. I think we are making life very hard for our kids with our ideas and debt--no matter which level of government the money comes from.

Living Life Forward wrote on Oct 17, 2008 12:42 PM:

Maybe the Home Builders Association has considered all of the negatives you all keep focusing on and have done their homework. How about waiting to find out details before condemning what you don't know. Whenever someone comes up with a new idea, there are always those who sit on the side lines trying to find something wrong with it. What are YOU doing to make the world a better place?

colin wrote on Oct 16, 2008 3:44 PM:

What's wrong with the convention center near the old Bangor school. In all the time I lived there, I never saw the building being used except when the town's Christmas tree was put up. The motocross events could be held on out on the dunes

What a Shame wrote on Oct 16, 2008 1:22 PM:

If all these people in the Home Builders Association want a Expo center, then let them pay for it. Just another example of someone coming up with a idea and wanting and whinning for someone else to pay for it. I want a new car, can I talk someone out there to pay for it for me so I can keep all of my money????Makes a lot of since don't it. One of the same..What a total shame

WHATEVER wrote on Oct 16, 2008 9:19 AM:

This has nothing to do with people not wanting to accept change. It has everything to do with living within our means. I would like to see that 12 million dollars go to fixing up what we already have. I love our community and it has a lot of potential but we need to resurrect what we already have!

Matt wrote on Oct 16, 2008 7:40 AM:

It would be a great idea but dont put it at the fairgrounds. It floods remember? The one in Central Point brings money all year round and this place is dead. Make something worth coming here for other than the casino and the beach!!!

Pirate2846 wrote on Oct 15, 2008 11:47 PM:

I agree with Mike...times have changed and the old industries are slow going. Time to push forward and find new options. A lot of people here are thinking of the "conference" rooms and such. This expo center (depending on how big it will be) could be a good, multi-use facility to house "home shows" to motocross and such. Although, if this facility is built, it will take some ideas and motivated people to search out and find groups that would want to use this facility.

Nick wrote on Oct 15, 2008 10:35 PM:

Hey, if this is 100% privately funded, I am absolutely for it. Otherwise, no thanks. Unless we get a contract to host a large number of events, well in advance, the money would be best spent elsewhere.
We can go 25 miles away for a rodeo. Heck, a few hundred thousand dollars spent, and we could put some new events in at the SPEEDWAY of all places.

Richard wrote on Oct 15, 2008 10:13 PM:

I think this is a fabulous idea. The idea of having it next to the mill casino is terrific. Good parking, easy access, large open area. Go for it!

Resident wrote on Oct 15, 2008 8:37 PM:

It's time for Americans, including those in Coos County, to live within their means. If the money for building it is not in our hands, forget it. Also, we need to think realistically about our area. As I once heard Tim Slater say, "Highway 42 and 38 are great, but not everyone agrees." So who will travel those roads in the winter? Or will we let the expo center set empty? Then, since it will only be used sometimes, who will pay for the maintenance or it? The endorsement of this does affect my vote.

Big Ideas wrote on Oct 15, 2008 7:29 PM:

Does this mean the Tennis Center at the Boys & Girls club is no longer available for the Home Show? It seems that they have a great handle on their annual production there. How many additional events will be developed in this community of 60,000 or so? We are a small town, there is no sense in shooting for a huge vacant facility.

LOOKING FORWARD wrote on Oct 15, 2008 5:43 PM:

Kudos to Her !! At least someone wants to try and bring revenue to this ghost town. I just don't understand why Newport, Lincoln City, Florence can thrive and we just seem to be wasting away. Our towns are beautiful and we have so much to offer. We just need to buck up and move forward, instead of staying in the past!! I for one am tired of watching familes leave because there is nothing to offer. We must have something I see people from other states here all the time.

Former Resident wrote on Oct 15, 2008 5:35 PM:

Wow. I would have to say that the more I read comments, the more I am glad I moved to Portland. Lower gas prices, higher wages, similar living cost.

I don't understand why the county can't build upon what they already have. There are so many good places in that area that are being thrown to the wayside.

All in the name of progress. True, the "Good old Days" might be gone. However, the people of the community need to step forward to stop such wasteful spending. Instead, utilize what you already have.

Create jobs. Refurbish the old. Make it shine. And most of all - make it reasonable.

C.C Fairgrounds.... wrote on Oct 15, 2008 3:19 PM:

I do believe that the Coos County Fairgrounds already have plans for a future Convention Center and Expo Center.
They have made way of all of the old building and structures.
They have plans drawn up and if I remember correctly, they have already been in the grant writing process.
HOW MANY CONVENTION/EXPO CENTERS can Coos County Support???

There are more places in this town that the Mill Casino or the Egyptian Theatre to hold events. What about the Red Lion or the Community College?

Local Lady wrote on Oct 15, 2008 2:33 PM:

I'm not going to say this is a completely good idea. I like that somebody came out with some forward thinking. But lets look at the big picture here. We already have plenty of spaces to use for many of the things that the expo center would be built for. We have the salmon room at the casino, the old Egyptian Theater, the soon to be upgraded fair grounds, the public libraries, etc etc etc. . . . . . Let's try to keep our plans realistic and stick to what will help us grow, or if not that, at least stop shrinking. But keep up the good work!

to the buzzkills wrote on Oct 15, 2008 2:12 PM:

While many of the negative opinions in this blog like to believe that there are facilities already in the area that could provide these services, I would like to point out that it would not be very practical to have a motocross or a rodeo in either the Salmon Room or the old JC Penney's (although it would be amusing to see someone try).

Mike wrote on Oct 15, 2008 2:10 PM:

Wow... All this community does is complain... The "good ol' days" are NEVER COMING BACK... GET OVER IT! It's time to look past fishing and logging... Also, we can't keep blaming local elected officials for all the problems... The only thing holding back progress in this area are the people who call Eugene a vacation destination. It's time for everyone to try and support new ideas to generate some buzz in the Bay Area.

Madelon wrote on Oct 15, 2008 1:16 PM:

Another example of why the local politicians who are afraid of their constituents should ask what people want here - more Golden Arches, more minimum wage jobs, light or heavy industry, more handouts from the government so we can fish all day, more food stamps for the undeserving?

WHATEVER wrote on Oct 15, 2008 12:31 PM:

Arent there enough places in town that offer the same services that an expo center will. The casino has the Salmon room. Seems like it would be a waste of money that could be used elsewhere in the community. Our local economy as well as federal economy doesnt seem to be good enough to constitute such a place. Especially with all of the businesses that are going under.

AnExample wrote on Oct 15, 2008 12:14 PM:

An expo center would really expose all the "NOT TO DO'S" that has been done building wise in Coos and North Bend.
It's like having a Mary Kay Cosmetics Expo at the Leper Colony.....

Kay wrote on Oct 15, 2008 11:40 AM:

Why don't we convert one of our TWO airline terminals?

Another "build it and they will come idea?"

Paid for by "grants and other sources?"

HEY THAT'S A GREAT IDEA GUYS, LET'S GO FOR IT !!!1

No Way wrote on Oct 15, 2008 11:38 AM:

There is not enough support in this community to make this a successful venture - mark my word it will lose money every year.

It seems to me that the Homebuilders Association is trying to provide themselves a place for the annual homeshow at the taxpayers expense.

how about the old sapphire's building? that's sitting there empty..... how about the j.c. penney's? doesn't look like the "sober" thing is working out for us.... how about bangor school? it's just sitting there? How about the mill casino's new tower, it's just sitting there ( yay for layoffs! ). I guess I'm just getting too cynical sitting here watching the busses go away, the trains stop and the horizon air disappear..... with the price of gas being so high, I'm terrified about getting stuck in this soon-to-be ghost town.....

oh! what about the lockhart building? I hear they're looking for some more investors to jump in on that one!
