North Bend’s volleyball team traveled to Marist over the weekend for a 12-team tournament and finished third, losing to eventual champion Burns in the semifinals. Burns took the best-of-three match 25-8, 25-8.
“We came out very tentative and they were relentless,” said Bulldogs coach Les Willett. “We didn’t have many attack attempts in either game.”
North Bend reached bracket play by going 2-1 in pool play. The Bulldogs started out by easily defeating Class 5A North Eugene 25-11, 25-15. But the North Bend team was overwhelmed by a tall Santiam Christian squad, as the Eagles topped the Bulldogs 25-14, 25-19. North Bend finished out pool play with Cascade and had a strong showing, sweeping 25-9, 25-12.
That sent the Bulldogs into the eight-team bracket play seeded fourth, and North Bend drew Creswell to start. The Bulldogs used strong serving to roll to a 25-8, 25-18 sweep.
“We were able to serve tough and put pressure on them,” said Willett.
That set up the two-game semifinal loss to Burns, the team that went on to defeat Marist in the final to win the tournament.
Since North Bend and Santiam Christian, which lost to Marist in the other semifinal, didn’t play a third-place match, they shared third in the tournament.
Alexandra Mateski led the Bulldogs with 38 kills and 33 digs throughout the tournament. Haley Dunham added 18 kills and 30 digs, while Katie Banta tallied 62 assists and 18 digs. Ashley Horlacher and Camille Deming both chipped in with 27 digs.
“This was a good tournament overall,” said Willett.
The 4-2 Bulldogs return to Far West League play tonight with a home match against 2-4 Sutherlin.
