Bandon motels nix tax request

BANDON — A group of local motel owners called the Bandon Lodging Partners has decided it won’t ask the city for additional motel tax funds.
The group known as the Lodging Partners, along with the City Manager Matt Winkel and Chamber of Commerce board members, are exploring other options to find money to promote tourism, according to Ed Backholm, owner of the Bandon Inn and a member of the group.
The Lodging Partners were planning this month to ask the council to allocate $150,000 from transient occupancy tax collections to help promote tourism in the off-season. Such a plan also would benefit the city by bringing in additional money to help fund city services, the group said.
The problem is the city spends it all.
Winkel, however, has said the money goes into the city’s general fund. It pays for police and planning services, so the city doesn’t have extra money.
“We accept the fact that the monies just aren’t there to make our proposal happen,” Backholm said this week. “We agreed to continue to explore the other options available.”
