Community Sports: Fast Breaks for Oct. 11: See Jane Run scheduled for Oct. 18 in John Topits Park

See Jane Run, the South Coast Women Only Run and Walk, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at John Topits Park in Coos Bay.
There will be a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run or walk and a noncompetitive 1-mile fun walk. Both events will take place on the Empire Lakes paved trails in the park.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Coos County Women’s Safety and Resource Center, which is cosponsoring the run/walks with the South Coast Running Club.
Entry fees are $22 with a T-shirt or $10 without. Entry forms are available at the Women’s Safety and Resource Center, 1681 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay, or by calling 290-3243 or 888-1048.
Devereux takes gold at Million Dollar Challenge
Connor Devereux from Sunset Middle School was the only runner to win a gold medal at the 10th-annual Million Dollar Challenge, held last Saturday on the Coos Bay waterfront.
Each contestant competed against a set of age-graded standards established by the Road Runners Club of America and the South Coast Running Club.
Devereux completed the 5,000-meter race, held in a driving rainstorm, in a time of 19 minutes, 55 seconds, finishing fourth behind a trio of Bandon High School runners. The fastest time was turned in by Brandon Lemerande, who finished in 18:17 and earned a silver medal. Second and third went to Isaac Taylor (18:50, silver medal) and Jared Watkins (19:06, bronze medal).
In the 2,500-meter race, for students age 14 and under, Jacob McAvoy of Sunset earned a silver medal, finishing first in 11:21. He was followed by Shaylen Crook (11:47) and Lindsay Devereux (12:32), both of Sunset. Both girls also earned silver medals.
The challenge, sponsored by Wal-Mart and the South Coast Running Club, drew 43 entrants and netted over $425 for middle school cross country programs in Bandon and Coos Bay.
South Coast Grapplers to start practice this week
The South Coast Grapplers, a regional wrestling club, will begin practice on Tuesday at the wrestling room in the new Rec Center at Southwestern Oregon Community College.
The club is for wrestlers from 6 to 17 years old. Practice runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Jessie’s wins championship in Tioga League
Jessie’s captured first place in the eight-team Tioga BCA League, which wrapped up its billiards season last week.
Jessie’s won trophies for finishing first in the standings and scoring the most scratch points during the season. Team members included captain George Reilly, Rick Tillett, Randy Baker, Rik Couch, Greg Cepeda, Jon Chase and Sid Usher.
Four Seasons of Coquille finished second and Coos Bay Eagles No. 538 was third in the trophy standings.
