Don’t eat the mussels

PORTLAND (AP) — Blame it on algae.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture on Friday shut down recreational mussel harvesting on the entire coast, from the mouth of the Columbia River to the California border. The closure is due to elevated levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins.

Commercial shellfish products remain safe.

Shellfish contaminated with the toxins can cause minor to severe illness or even death. The toxins are produced by algae and usually originate in the ocean.
