Former North Bend standout Kelcy McKenna was named Arizona State University’s Athlete of the Week after she won the women’s tennis singles title at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday.

To earn the honor, McKenna defeated four seeded players, including No. 1 seeded Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas.

McKenna beat Miseviciute 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. She topped Fani Chifchieva of Auburn 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match after rallying to beat No. 6 seed Maria Mosolova 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the semifinals.

McKenna, a sophomore for the Sun Devils, is currently riding a nine-match winning streak since Sept. 20. She’s now won back-to-back singles championships, including the ITA title over the weekend and the Cal Nike Invitational last week, where she also took the doubles title with teammate Micaela Hein.

Porter in action

Former Marshfield volleyball star Heather Porter, now in her sophomore year at Southern Oregon University, had five kills in an Oct. 4 win at Cascade that moved the Raiders to 9-1 in the Cascade Conference and stretched the team’s winning streak to eight games.

The 6-foot, 3-inch middle blocker from Coos Bay recorded a 12-kill game against Evergreen State that started the winning streak Sept. 12. She also had strong games of seven kills against Northwest University Sept. 13 and six kills against Oregon Tech Sept. 23, according to the school’s Web site.

Linfield football

Former Siuslaw quarterback Gabe Haberly earned a starting spot at cornerback in the opening game of his senior year of football at Linfield College this year. Haberly recorded two tackles and a broken-up pass in the 29-22 season-opening loss to Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Tex.

Since then the Wildcats have picked up a pair of home wins, including a 14-7 overtime victory at  against Southern Oregon University Sept. 27 and a 9-0 win over visiting Menlo College Oct. 4.

Against Southern Oregon, Haberly didn’t start but tallied four tackles, and he had one tackle coming off the bench against Menlo.
