School tours start today over levy information

The Coos Bay School District is inviting residents to tour Millicoma Middle School and the former Eastside Elementary school today. The school tour is part of the the district’s effort to pass a school improvement bond measure.

People who plan to attend should meet at 9 a.m. at the front entrance to Millicoma. The tour is scheduled to last two hours.

District voters will consider Ballot Measure No. 6-120 on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. The $59.5 million, 25-year bond measure calls for the construction of two new elementary schools at the sites of Madison Avenue Elementary School and the closed Eastside Elementary School.

The district wants to make major upgrades and renovations to improve health, safety and security, upgrade aging infrastructure and improve operating efficiencies to reduce costs at existing buildings, a press release said.

The buildings range in age from 45 to 85 years, with the exception of Sunset Middle School and the Math/Science building at Marshfield High School. Two more tours are scheduled, to be led by Joel Smallwood, the district’s maintenance supervisor, from 9 to 11 a.m.

n Oct. 18: Madison Avenue Elementary and Blossom Gulch, meet at the front entrance at Madison.

n Oct. 25: Marshfield High School, meet at the front entrance to the main building.
