Thurston handed Marshfield its first Midwestern League volleyball loss of the season, sweeping the Pirates 25-21, 25-14, 25-17 at Pirate Palace.

“(Thurston) played a lot better than when we played them up there,” Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel said. “We kind of played with no emotion and never could get anything going.”

She added that the loss could turn into a positive.

“Hopefully there’s a little learning lesson from it,” Montiel said. “We don’t want to have it happen again.”

Jessica Hockema had seven kills to lead the Pirates. Kara Young had six kills and three aces, while Nikki Gross added 18 assists and 14 digs.

Marshfield battled with the Colts to a 16-16 tie in the third game, “and then just completely folded,” Montiel said.

The good news for the Pirates is they still remain alone in first place, because Thurston lost to Willamette during the first half of the season.

“The nice thing is the teams below us all had at least two losses, even with this loss if we can win out the rest of them, it can put us in the league championship,” she said.

Next week, Marshfield hosts North Eugene and visits Churchill before playing host to its first-ever home invitational next Saturday.

Sunset Conference

Bobcats beat Panthers

Myrtle Point edged host Gold Beach, 26-24, 25-20, 25-22, boosting the Bobcats’ playoff hopes and slowing the momentum of the second-place Panthers.

Sam Sanders had 13 assists and 12 digs to lead the Bobcats, who improved to 5-5 in leauge play, a game behind third-place Coquille, with four matches to go. Amanda Sturgill and Erin Fullerton each recorded seven kills and Sturgill also had seven blocks.

Molly Hockema had 13 kills, three digs and two blocks for the Panthers. Rendall MacLaurie had 24 assists, Lindsey McDonald had 10 digs, and Sydney Hadley had four kills, three aces and two blocks.

Gold Beach fell to 8-2.

Devils tip Braves

Coquille edged visiting Reedsport in a five-set marathon, winning 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-27, 15-7.

Coquille coach Troy Cooper said his team rebounded in the fifth game after Reedsport came roaring back to even the match.

“We picked up our hustle and got to the ball for the passing, for the setting and for the hitting so we could execute the way we wanted to,” Cooper said. “We forced the hustle. Reedsport was really hustling those balls down. We had to match up.”

Nikki Hall had 17 kills, two stuff blocks and three aces for the Red Devils. Stephanie Jones 15 kills and five aces, Lindsey Cooper had 36 digs and three aces, and Chelsey Forbes had 39 assists and two aces.

Camille Tisler had 16 kills and Shelby Wiggans added 23 digs for the Braves.

Tigers top Chieftains

Bandon beat visiting Rogue River, 25-16, 25-12, 14-25, 25-21.

Briana Valentine had 15 kills and five digs for the Tigers. Grace Garrett had 10 kills and seven digs, and Jordan Tipton 22 assists, three aces, four digs

Sabrina Smith had nine kills and seven blocks to lead the Chieftains. Kirsten Pitari had five kills and Alli Ehrhardt three kills and nine blocks

Challengers beat Glide

Cascade Christian beat host Glide, 25-10, 25-7, 25-13 to remain perfect in league play.

Amanda Beard and Becca Sellers combined for 23 kills and Breanna Holtz had 24 assists for the Challengers.

BOYS SOCCER

Far West League

Bruins top Pacific

Brookings-Harbor had two quick goals and went on to beat host Pacific 3-1 in a Far West League match on Wednesday.

“I thought they played a good game,” Pacific coach Tom Swenson said. “They did a good job taking care of the ball when they had it.

“We played a pretty good game ourselves. We had letdowns.”

Two of those came early, when the Bruins got goals in the third and fourth minutes, by Thomas Spratt and Dylan Roberts, respectively. The Bruins didn’t score again until Kevin Sthen got an insurance goal in the 77th minute, when the Pirates were trying to rally for a tying goal and reorganized their defense.

David Sanin scored for the Pirates in the 51st minute, on a rebound after a shot by Pete Swenson.

“They’re a lot more solid team than we are,” Swenson said.

GIRLS SOCCER

Midwestern League

Highlanders top Pirates

North Eugene beat host Marshfield 5-0 on Thursday to stay perfect in Midwestern League play.

The Highlanders led 2-0 at halftime and added three more in the second half, the last one coming on a penalty kick.

Kelsie Knight, Kori Frier, Tayler Ficek, Calli Dowdy and Chloe Kronberger had the goals for the Highlanders.

Marshfield coach Kitty DeMoss came away happy with her team’s performance in the loss.

“The girls played well,” she said.

The Highlanders had 18 shots and Marshfield goalie Megan Meador recorded 13 saves.

“She really holds down the net back there,” DeMoss said.

Cassie Messerle, Emily Nauman, Katherine Bones and Hannah Francis  all had strong matches for the Pirates, DeMoss added.

The Pirates have been battling injuries, though they got senior Kelsey Laird back for about 20 minutes in Wednesday’s match. Senior captain Christine Hunter, Marshfield’s leader in the midfield, took an elbow to the nose in the second half and will see a doctor today to determine the extent of the injury, DeMoss said.

Through it all, the Pirates have stayed upbeat as they try to build up the program in what has traditionally been a very strong league.

“The girls have played well,” DeMoss said. “They’ve tried to pull it together. They keep making progress. They never give up. They never get down on each other.”

The results have shown improvement. Even though Marshfield doesn’t have a league win this fall, the losses have been closer than in the past.

“The (other teams) come into Marshfield looking for a fight and they know we’re going to battle them,” DeMoss said.
