COOS BAY — Judith Hansen’s resignation caused barely a ripple among students interviewed Wednesday on Southwestern’s Coos Bay campus. Many were not aware that employees had issued votes of no-confidence in her leadership or that the college recently borrow $1.5 million to meet payroll.

One of the few students who had an inkling something was going on with the president was Caitlin Portinga, a freshman from Portland.

She said there were rumors among students about misused college money, but her sense was those accusations were false.

Portinga admitted she wasn’t really sure what was going on in the college’s upper echelons.

“I probably should,” she said. “It’s good to know who’s in charge of things.”

Christine Potter, a freshman from Myrtle Point, said she figured the college had some financial difficulties when she almost lost a one-term tuition waiver.

She said she learned her scholarship was at risk a few weeks ago. She eventually secured the tuition, and otherwise has no knowledge of problems in the college’s administration.

“I don’t even know what the president does,” she said.

Most staffers weren’t talking Wednesday and certainly not for attribution.

Campus bookstore Manager Jill Christiana said the administrative issues haven’t really affected students, except perhaps those seeking financial aid.

“Overall the atmosphere is good,” she said.

Jonathon Butt, a senior taking classes through Southwestern’s University Center, said he only learned about Hansen’s resignation by reading about it online. Campus politics don’t generally enter into his conversations.

“We don’t hear about it much as students,” he said. “It doesn’t affect what goes on in the classroom.”

Christiana was the only campus employee willing to speak to the media, which she attributes to lingering paranoia on campus. In her opinion, Hansen’s decision was a good one.

“The trust factor is lost and probably not going to be regained,” she said. “It was time to move on.”

Faculty also may have been leery about speaking to the media because of an e-mail sent to staff asking them to refer all questions to director of communications Rick Osborn.

One student was excited momentarily when he heard the president resigned. He calmed down after learning it was the college president.

As a former student of SWOCC (or SOCC, or whatever they want to call themselves now), I think it is important that students are taught some of the things that take place in the management of the school that they attend. I'm sorry, this is NOT a private school or a private corporation... this is a public institution, funded with public monies, and those who pay to attend the school DESERVE to know what happens in the management of the school.

Granted, the students shouldn't have received unprofessional opinions from each member of the faculty regarding Ms. Hansen, but they did not deserve to be left out in the cold regarding the situation that has taken place over the last year. Heck, I remember some grumblings about Hansen when I was a student, not long after she was hired (but, NOT ONCE, did this take place in the classroom).

Students were not oblivious? Many of us are well informative about the issues that were taking place. This is a very incorrect title to this article. The World did an "outstanding" job of reporting and asking only a handful of students out of thousands. Do not accuse students of false political views based on the paper's incomplete reporting. And those students that did not know...good for them. Their focus should be on education, not corrupt college employees.

I was in a program last yeat at OCCI and it was well known there were problems between our chef and the president. She would come to all the classes but his and once they fired him and replaced him she started coming in our class. Just after half of us left he program I might add. That school has major problems and it wasn't just her. We had a counelor spying on one of my classmates and reporting to her father. Bottom line...
SWOCC is too much about tuition and not enough about teaching!

We were sent an e-mail giving us a directive to refer the media to Rick Osborn. This has been going on for years, way before Judith became our leader.

Nothing will happen to Jill for speaking out because she supported Dr. Hansen's departure. If any of us dared to comment opposing this we would have been fired by the new interim President, Patty Scott.

Well Moonpenny, I was thinking future dittoheads...LOL!

Ah Moonpenny, I'll betcha you didn't graduate
magna cu laude from Harvard Law or give up
a big six figure lawyer's salary to go into public
service. What a tragedy. You lack the intellect
to judge Obama's ability to assemble a team
capable of addressing the problems left by McCain,
Bush and their self serving hacks.

Couldn't agree with you more Justmusin; well said.

I am glad the majority of students didn't know what was going on. It shows that the staff and faculty at SWOCC did not allow the no-confidence votes or personal feelings to be seen or heard in the classroom. The classroom is for education; students are paying for that education. It is not a place for in-house politics and mud-slinging. Kudos to SWOCC faculty and staff for sticking to ethics.
