Dean of Students Patty Scott was a little surprised when Judith Hansen resigned Wednesday. But she was much more startled by how the board of education responded.

Board members appointed Scott to head the college on an interim basis in Hansen’s stead.

“I was very surprised when I found out,” she said. “I hadn’t even been contacted by them.”

Scott expected Hansen would remain at the college at least until the Oregon School Boards Association submitted its report next week.

Now, Scott finds herself in charge of a community college with surging enrollment, unhappy employees and financial shortcomings that recently necessitated borrowing $1.5 million.

She will serve in the top job for at least a month, while the OSBA helps the college find someone with community college presidential experience to fill in until a permanent president can be hired.

Scott said she would consult with other campus leaders before making any changes at the college. Already, one of the less popular decisions of the Hansen presidency has been reversed.

Due to the financial crisis, Hansen postponed hiring new staff, which some employees, including Scott, criticized for overworking an understaffed financial aid department.

Scott said the college is soliciting applications for the empty position from campus employees. The plan is to hire someone who works at the college so Southwestern doesn’t have to add another salary to its already tight budget.

“That position directly impacts students,” said Scott. “It really needs to be filled.”

Scott said it was a sad day for the college to lose its president, though she would not fault Hansen for tendering her resignation.

“Given where we were at, it was the right decision,” she said.

"Get over it people... if you are not here working or learning as a student - stay out of it."

"...stay out of it". You're kidding me! Last I checked, the community college campus is supported with taxpayers dollars. That means it is every right of every taxpaying citizen to make a comment, read these blogs, formulate an opinion and be concerned with the leadership overseeing this multimillion dollar investement!

If you are a student who made this ignorant comment, thank the citizens of the district AND get educated a little more before you make such a brash comment. If you are an educator or staff member of the college... shame on you!

When I graduated three years ago, Dr. Scott headed the Student Support Services department of the college. If not for SSS and their programs I may still be there trying to graduate.

For those who doubt Dr. Scott's abilities and priorities I suggest they look at her record of accomplishments and talk to former and present students who have been impacted by her wisdom and guidance.

Get over it people - Patty support our STUDENTS and knows that this is a COMMUNITY COLLEGE - if you are not here working or learning as a student - stay out of it. You have no clue what Hansen put us through - she does not even remember students who have interviewed her - or spent hours with her - she does not even remember the staff names - she is gone - she FINALLY did the right thing. now we need to clear out the board members who forgot that they are hear for the COLLEGE - not wine night at Judiths!

Seems like we are replacing ineptitude with ignorant ineptitude. Good for the school! One step forward, two steps back.

How about bringing back Dr. Schoonmaker??
He was very qualified and with out judith breathing down his neck he could do some great things for this school. I would ask the board to please seriously consider this option!

Nancy wrote on Oct 9, 2008 3:20 PM:

Patty was not suprised. This poor decision shows us how lame the board really is. Anyone who has sat in a meeting with Patty while she is rolling her eyes, talking under her breath, speaking out of turn, and embarassing us all must know how bad this is.

We just lost the best leader we have ever had and she was replaced with what may be the worst leader yet.

Patty will blame Judith for anything that is wrong at the college but she will do what she accused Judith of. Watch how many people will be reorganized and fired or retired. All will be supporters of Judith, no doubt!

What are her qualifications? Why so many Vice presidents at this place?

10 minutes wrote on Oct 9, 2008 1:52 PM:

It said in the other article it took all of 10 minutes to decide on Dr. Scott...and the board new she would accept? Come on, give the rest of us some credit. We knew this was staged.

Now...Patty claimed to be afraid of being fired in several public meetings and Dr. Hansen promised her she wasn't in jeopardy. Will Dr. Scott do the same to the others who feel their end is near? Or has cleaning house just started?

To the President... wrote on Oct 9, 2008 1:01 PM:

Dr. Scott, You were not surprised. You couldn't be happier Dr. Hansen is gone, as you have stated numerous times to other employees and in meetings.

All of the sudden your candor has been traded for "diplomacy".

I believe this used to be called speaking with a forked tongue.

sure patty.... wrote on Oct 9, 2008 11:31 AM:

...tell me patty scott had nothing to do with spearheading the unhappy employees movement!

Surprised? Yea right!

This little chess game that was played was no surpise to many. Including the players. So do not fake surpise, rook to Queen.

As the days fade away you will all see how this coup was produced behind closed doors off campus and at family bbq's during the summer.
