Chess moves

The Coquille Chess Club will be hosting the October Falling Leaves Scholastic Chess Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Coquille High School. Trophies will be awarded to the top three places of all grade levels. An adult section also will be offered. A concession stand of hot dogs, cups of noodles, soups, chips and soda will be available for lunch.

Fun and books

The Lakeside Friends of the Library will host the Fall Fun Book Sale and Open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with the sale at the Senior Center behind the library.

The open house will be in the library. This year, current and new members will get first pick shopping from 9 to 10 a.m.

New membership applications will be available at the entrance for the fee of $5. For more information, call 759-4432.

Saving the pool

Celebrating women

The Women’s Safety and Resource Center will be holding a “Celebrating Women’s Spirit” event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Pony Village Mall in North Bend. The event will feature contributions from community leaders, civic groups, artists, musicians and several domestic violence survivors. Exhibits and art will include topics such as domestic violence, transformation, entertainment and speakers. Print-making

Art students can learn techniques for the non-toxic intaglio printmaking process in a workshop taught by Pat Snyder. The workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 11 and 18, at the Coos Art Museum. Students will become familiar with print-making terminology as well as intaglio preparation. The class fee is $60 for Coos Art Museum members, and $80 for non-members. There is also a $20 lab fee. The workshop is limited to six students, call 267-4877 to sign up.

‘Iron Jawed Angels’

The Coos Bay Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Coos County are presenting a free screening of the film, “Iron Jawed Angels,” at 11 a.m. Saturday. The screening will be held in the Myrtlewood Room of the library. Coos County clerk Terri Turi will introduce the film and be available to register voters. Popcorn and sodas will be provided.

“Iron Jawed Angels” is a 2004 HBO film that tells the true story of defiant and brilliant young activists Alice Paul, played by Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank, and Lucy Barns, played by Frances O’Connor. The two women took the women’s suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote, a press release said.

Singles meeting

The South Coast Singles will meet for lunch at noon Saturday at the Lucky Dragon Restaurant in the Pony Village Mall. The meeting will follow after lunch. All are welcome. For more information, call 267-3443 or 267-4148.

Auction time

An auction at Sixes Grange will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The public may view items for auction beginning at noon. There will be hundreds of items including Indian jewelry, furniture and household items.

There also will be baked goods for sale. All proceeds will benefit the grange building repairs fund. The Sixes Grange is  four miles north of Port Orford on Highway 101. For more information, call Linda at (541) 332-1581 or Jane at 332-9891.

Loud art

Art Out Loud, a show about making statements in the forms of writing, painting, sculpture, performance or music, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The show is open to all ages and will be held at 2217 Highway 101 in Florence, above the Silver Lining Boutique. Fun with trivia

The Friends of the Coquille Library will host the annual Trivia Night at 7 p.m. Saturday at Coquille’s Community Building, 105 N. Birch St. Participants can come with a team of up to eight people, or walk in and join a team. There will be ten rounds of ten questions, with door prizes all night. A no-host bar will also be available.

The cost is $10 per person, and reservations are recommended. The event is a benefit for the library. For more information and to register, call 396-2166.

Mozart sounds

Bronn Journey will be perform at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Mildred Hill concert at Zion Lutheran Church, 20th Street and Washington in Port Orford. Journey refers to the proven healing capacities of Mozart and other’s music.

The Journey are popular throughout the Northwest. The program is part of their current tour, which includes a community concert performance. Twisted movie

The Waterfront Players Repertory Company will celebrate Columbus Day with an anniversary showing of its 2002 production of “Cyclone! True Stories of the Columbus Day Storm.”

The movie was created for commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the storm, which devastated the West Coast from San Diego to British Columbia. The production will be interesting to those who like history and effects of high-wind storms, a press release said.

The video will  be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Bend Public Library.

The event is a fundraiser for the Waterfront Players.

Folk sing-along

The South Coast Folk Society will host a community sing-along at 4 p.m.  Sunday at Colette’s Restaurant in North Bend. All are welcome for two hours of singing. Musical instruments are also welcome. For more information, call 756-4701.

Teen readers

The Douglas County library system will be celebrating the 11th-annual Teen Read Week from Oct. 12 through 18. Thousands of libraries, schools and bookstores will celebrate this year’s theme “Books with Bite at Your Library.”

Teen Read Week is a national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association. The library system hopes to increase teen literacy locally by offering a program for teens at all outlets of the system during October.

Programs at the Headquarters Library in Roseburg will be held in the Ford Community Room from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 21 and 28.
