Sports Briefs: Dunleavy takes on GM role with Clippers

LOS ANGELES — Elgin Baylor is out as vice president of basketball operations with the Los Angeles Clippers, and coach Mike Dunleavy will assume his responsibilities as general manager.
“We greatly appreciate Elgin’s efforts during his time with the Clippers, and we wish him the very best,” Clippers owner and chairman of the board Donald T. Sterling said in a statement Tuesday.
The 74-year-old Baylor became vice president of basketball operations with the Clippers in 1986 after an outstanding 14-year playing career with the Lakers and a brief stint as coach of the New Orleans Jazz.
He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976, chosen as one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players during the league’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1997, and named the NBA executive of the year following the 2005-06 season.

Jones goes to drug court
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Matt Jones’ cocaine charge will be heard in drug court rather than in the regular criminal system and will allow him to keep any conviction off his record.
Jones, 25, was to have gone on trial Friday for his July 10 arrest when a Fayetteville police officer saw him inside a car allegedly cutting up cocaine with a credit card.
Prosecutor John Threet said his office reached an agreement with Jones on Tuesday to send the case to drug court. Threet and Jones’ attorney, Woody Bassett, said Circuit Judge William Storey approved the transfer Tuesday.
Bassett said Jones has to appear in drug court 1 p.m. Oct. 13 before Circuit Judge Mary Ann Gunn. Jones is a former quarterback at Arkansas and a first-round draft pick of the Jaguars in 2005.
Prosecutors say the felony charge will be dismissed if Jones completes the drug program.
Hasselbeck practices
RENTON, Wash. — Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is expected to practice today despite a bruised knee.
It is the most extensive preparation day of the week before slumping Seattle (1-3) faces Green Bay (2-3) on Sunday at Qwest Field. That makes Hasselbeck likely to practice on what he says is a bone bruise on his right knee. Both he and coach Mike Holmgren say Hasselbeck will start against the Packers.
The three-time Pro Bowl passer got hurt early in last weekend’s 44-6 loss at the New York Giants but returned to play deep into the third quarter.
NFL suspends Bengal
CINCINNATI — The NFL suspended Cincinnati Bengals reserve linebacker Darryl Blackstock for the next four games on Tuesday because he used a performance-enhancing substance.
The Bengals signed Blackstock as a free agent from Arizona in the offseason. He has played in all five games, including one start, and has four tackles. The fourth-year veteran said in a statement that one of his nutritional supplements contained an ingredient banned by the league.
“I’ve apologized to my coaches and teammates for an unfortunate mistake,” Blackstock said. “I did not intentionally violate the policy, but I know it’s my responsibility to use only approved nutritional supplements, and I didn’t realize I was taking an over-the-counter product that included a banned substance.”
Colorado gives Hawkins contract extension
BOULDER, Colo. — Colorado coach Dan Hawkins and the university have agreed to a contract extension that could keep him with the Buffaloes through 2012.
Hawkins is 11-9 in his third year at Colorado, and the Buffaloes are 3-2 this season.
The new contract was announced Tuesday. It takes effect on July 1.
Hawkins originally signed a five-year, $4.25 million contract, not including incentives, that was to run through Dec. 31, 2010.
Hawkins can earn incentives for making it to the Big 12 championship game, winning league or a national titles, playing in bowl games and being conference or national coach of the year.
