North Bend beat South Umpqua on the road in a Far West League volleyball match Tuesday night, winning 25-13, 25-17, 25-27, 25-13. Alexandra Mateski had 16 kills and 13 digs for the Bulldogs in the win, while Hailey Dunham added 14 kills and 12 digs and Katie Banta had 34 assists and 19 digs.

Jenny Stevenson led the Lancers with nine blocks and three kills, while Taylor Whitmore chipped in 11 assists.

“They move good, and they always bring the ball back hard,” said South Umpqua coach Sarah Grey of the Bulldogs. “I felt like we were on the defense most of time.”

Vikings beat Bruins

Siuslaw stayed perfect in the Far West League by beating host Brookings-Harbor, 25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19.

Shelbey McClellan had 19 kills, while Leigh Aurich had three aces and three kills for the Vikings.

Dani Olson had 13 blocks and eight kills for the Bruins. Shawn Cooper had eight kills and libero Felicia Gutierrez had 31 digs.

Douglas avenges loss

Douglas avenged one of its two losses from the first half of the league season, beating visiting Sutherlin 25-20, 25-13, 25-22.

Courtney Bush had 12 kills, five stuff blocks and four aces for the Trojans. Stacia Blankenship added 13 kills and 10 digs and Alaina Findlay had 27 assists.

Amanda Hutchings had eight kills, nine blocks and eight digs for Sutherlin. Dani Hults had 21 assists and 11 digs and Mikayla Mendenhall had 19 digs, five kills and one block.

“I am very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said Douglas coach Carl Bone. “They had beaten us the first time around in five games and we felt like we could have played a lot better. We didn’t make as many errors as we had been and it really helped us out.”

Wolves top Cruisers

League-leading Days Creek swept visiting Powers, 25-22, 25-10, 25-20 on Tuesday.

“Overall, I thought we played Days Creek very well,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “We made them work pretty hard for every point. We had some good serving and good attacks and net play, but we weren’t able to finish the rallies.”

Nicole Bittner had four kills and two aces, Kristin Clauson had 12 digs, Haley Patterson had 10 assists and Liz Linderman had five kills for the Cruisers.

BOYS SOCCER

Pilots beat Panthers

Alex Mikue had two goals and an assists to help Canyonville Christian to a 4-1 win over visiting Gold Beach.

Mario Pena and Artur Zubets had the other goals for the Pilots.

Gold Beach still is seeking its first win in Class 3A-2A-1A District 3, though the team has two ties. Canyonville Christian improved to 5-4-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

Glide tops Coquille

Glide beat host Coquille 4-1 on Tuesday, but Coquille co-coach Sharon Usselman came away pleased with her team’s performance.

Usselman praised the girls for their play in their meeting after the match.

“This was definitely a win in my book for us,” she recalled telling the players.

“Even though the score was 4-1, we held Glide to a 0-0 tie until after halftime,” she said. “It was tied in the second half 1-1 for quite a while.”

Megan Sullivan scored the goal for the Red Devils.

Glide pulled away with three goals in the last 10 minutes.

“It was a very good effort,” Usselman said. “It was probably the best 75 minutes of soccer our girls have played this year.”

Freshman Katy Cornell blossomed in her second match at center fullback  in place of Christie Andy, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last week.

Bailey Richardson had her best game at midfielder and exchange student Mia Toskala had a strong game at fullback in the second half.

Usselman also said senior Cheyenne Sherbondy has been a team leader in practice for the young squad.
