HELENA, Mont. — Quarterback Drew Hubel of Portland State and defensive end Kevin Linehan of Weber State have been named the Big Sky Conference football players of the week.
Hubel earned offensive honors, while Linehan won the defensive award. Northern Arizona punter and kicker Robbie Dehaze was named the special teams player of the week.
Hubel, a sophomore Corvallis, completed 44 of 73 passes for 623 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in Portland State’s 47-36 upset of No. 11 Eastern Washington. He set an NCAA FCS record for most pass attempts in a game without an interception.
Linehan, a junior from Los Alamitos, Calif., recorded a pair of sacks and seven total tackles in Weber State’s 48-28 upset of No. 3 Montana.
Dehaze, a senior from Sherwood, averaged 51.2 yards per punt on four punts and made field goals of 37 and 48 yards in No. 24 Northern Arizona’s 42-10 win over Sacramento State.
ASU QB is hurting
TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said he wants to see how quarterback Rudy Carpenter’s sprained left ankle responds before deciding whether he’ll play at No. 8 USC on Saturday.
Carpenter was hurt in the Sun Devils’ 24-14 loss at California last weekend. The senior has made 36 straight starts, but that streak could be in jeopardy. Erickson said the quarterback must “be close to 100 percent” to play.
The Sun Devils (2-3, 1-1 Pac-10) have dropped three straight games after opening the season ranked No. 15 in The AP Top 25.
