Marshfield beat host Springfield, 25-13, 25-19, 25-22 on Monday to finish a perfect 5-0 in the first half of the Midwestern League volleyball season.

“That’s a good feeling to be in that spot,” Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel said.

Marshfield is two games in front of Churchill, Thurston and Willamette with five games remaining on the schedule.

The Pirates started strong Monday, and played well enough to win the final two games against the Millers.

“I thought that the first game, we came out and played really well,” Montiel said.

Jessica Hockema had nine kills to lead Marshfield’s offense. Kara Young had seven kills, Nikki Gross had 14 assists and eight digs, and Brittney Young had four aces and five digs.

Brittney Young was playing at libero, her natural position, for the first time since the league season started, having been forced into an outside hitter spot because of injuries.

“She’s back in her home position, which is good for us,” Montiel said. “We’ll enjoy having her back in there.”

The Pirates host Thurston on Wednesday.

Sunset Conference

Panthers tip Red Devils

Gold Beach swept Coquille in a key Sunset Conference volleyball match on Monday, winning the three games by two points each.

The Panthers won 27-25, 30-28, 25-23 to improve to 8-1 on the season and complete a season sweep of the third-place Red Devils(5-4), which puts Gold Beach in great shape to finish second in the final league standings.

Molly Hockema had 16 kills, four blocks, two digs and an ace for Gold Beach. Katherine Zuber had four kills and three blocks, Lily Miller had seven kills and setter Rendall MacLaurie had five aces and 30 assists.

Nikki Hall had nine kills and two aces for Coquille, while Lindsey Cooper had 27 digs, Karlie Libby had three blocks and two kills, and Courtney Davis had two blocks.

Bobcats beat Chieftains

Myrtle Point beat visiting Rogue River, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19, to move into fourth place in the league standings.

Sam Sanders had four assists, seven kills, two blocks, 10 digs and five aces among 17 service points for the Bobcats. Kaitlyn McCollum had five kills and two blocks, Courtney Love had five assists and 12 points, and Cally Kennedy had five assists and a kill.

Challengers top Bandon

Cascade Christian stayed perfect in league play be sweeping visiting Bandon, 25-7, 25-12, 25-8 on Monday.

Breanna Holtz had 31 assists and Becca Sellers had 10 kills for the Challengers.

Glide edges Reedsport

Glide topped host Reedsport in five games Monday, winning 25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 22-25, 16-14. Specific details of the match were not available.

Far West League

Devils, Pirates tie

Coquille and Pacific played to a 1-1 draw on Monday.

Pacific scored in the 33rd minute, when David Sanin netted a goal.

Coquille answered in the second half when Ryan Dannels scored in the 58th minute.

Both teams had numerous shots — 18 for Pacific and 15 for Coquille.

“They  have really improved,” said Pacific coach Tom Swenson of the Red Devils. “They look like a pretty solid team on the field. They play good defense. They put a lot of pressure on the attack.”

Swenson credited goalkeeper Julian Carter and forward Jarrid Doffing, one of the players on the team from Bandon, for providing leadership in the match.

“I was pleased with Pacific’s play,” he said. “I feel like we’re still continuing to improve and play a style that we can be happy with.”

Coquille coach Randy Lucas, meanwhile, said that though he wasn’t happy with the outcome, he is thrilled with his team’s development.

“This was a great battle between two teams vying for a playoff spot,” he said. “Not too many people though we would be saying playoffs and Coquille in the same sentence, but we are proving ourselves every game to us and everyone else.”

The two teams remain tied at 3-3-1, while South Umpqua, which entered the day sharing third place with the Pirates and Red Devils, moved in front with a 2-0 win over Sutherlin.

The Pirates host second-place Brookings-Harbor in a big match Wednesday, while Coquille has a bye.

Bruins beat Douglas

Brookings-Harbor beat visiting Douglas 7-0 on Monday.

The Bruins led 5-0 at halftime.

Dylan Roberts and Brandon Bristo had two goals each for the Bruins, while Anthony Babb, Kevin Sthen and Thomas Esprat also scored for Brookings-Harbor.

Monarchs top NB

Umpqua Valley Christian beat visiting North Bend 7-1 on Monday.

Danni Beuchly had five goals for the Monarchs in the win.

Taylor Cribbins had North Bend’s goal in the second half.

“The first 15 minutes, we played really well and and a couple of great opportunities, and just couldn’t capitalize,” North Bend coach Dustin Hood said.

Bruins win again

Brookings-Harbor kept pace with South Umpqua atop the league standings with a 2-0 win at Douglas on Monday.

Boston and South Umpqua both are 6-0-2 after the Lancers beat Sutherlin 1-0.
