COOS BAY — A one-car rollover crash early Sunday morning in downtown Coos Bay sent five people to the hospital.

Two remained hospitalized this morning and police have joined with the Coos County District Attorney’s Office in an investigation.

A caller reported the crash at 2:11 a.m. Several people were hurt after a 2002 Hyundai four-door sedan rolled over on the northbound side of U.S. Highway 101, just north of the Timber Inn.

The initial investigation revealed that Coos Bay resident Melissa Delano, 26, tried to navigate a curve just past the inn, and the Hyundai left the roadway on the east side. The vehicle eventually ended up on its roof, District Attorney R. Paul Frasier wrote in a press release.

Five Coos Bay residents, including Delano, David E. Delano Jr., 21; Christopher England, 21; Gregory J. Lentz, 34; and Ashley M. Reel, 26, were in the Hyundai at the time of the crash. All were taken to Bay Area Hospital. Each of the passengers were treated and released, with the exception of David Delano and Lentz, who were both listed in fair condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Coos County Crash Team, the Coos Bay Police Department, the North Bend Police Department, the Oregon State Police, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office helped at the scene. Members of the team remained there until early afternoon Sunday.

The matter remains under investigation. No citations have been issued, nor have any charges been filed at this time.

“We need to do more investigation before I decide what to do,” Frasier said this morning.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Coos Bay Police Department, the press release said. Coos Bay Police Department spokeswoman Helen Thompson said she could not comment on the case while it’s under investigation.

Of course they are going to investgate any crash of this magnitude. Insurance claims have to be filed and if that had happened to any of your children wouldnt you want the police to do their jobs.People rant when they think they are not doing a "Good enough" job and then they rant when they do.It was late, the roads were wet, what condition were the tires on her car? none of us know this stuff so let them do what they need to do.

I think the police need to do some drug and alcohol testing if not already done. Thank god nobody died and thank god no innocent people were hurt or killed because of these peoples careless actions.

We also seen the scene and there was a child car seat. I want to know was the childs seat stored in the trunk or was somone sitting in it at the time of the crash or sitting on someones lap? Very dangerous! So lucky that everyone is alive!

Maybe the police need to do some drug and alcohol screenings. Yes thank god nobody died and it could have been alot worse. So many innocent people could have been hurt or killed because of the careless people's actions.

OK. I have witnessed an elderly lady driving around that corner at 40 mph - she hit the curb and went up on it. I pulled over and those in my car helped her get off of the curb. I saw the car that wrecked this Sunday - there was NO way that car was doing the speed limit. What were they doing in the car to not notice the corner that is well marked - and is EASY to navigate? I am happy to hear that nobody died - but gee - these people had to be either not paying attention or under the influence of something. I did not recall seeing any skid marks either. Just a mess along the side of the road from all of the stuff that flew out of their car.

Mark, sounds like a bunch of kids going to fast. But we got our number one Frasier on the case. He figure it out for us.

Mark Smith wrote on Oct 6, 2008 11:38 AM:

How does one roll a car in a 30 or 40 mph zone like this. That car shouldn't roll at those speeds on that corner. Were speeding and/or alcohol involved?

Thank goodness no one was injured! Better count your blessings.

suprised well maybe not wrote on Oct 6, 2008 11:08 AM:

I had heard about this accident and then saw all of the activity that was going on there late sunday morning I had thought that maybe someone was killed. If not, why is all of this investigating being done. She lost control of the car because of either speed or driver error and if she had been drinking she would have been arrested which didn't happen, so what is left the investigate???
