October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Coos County Public Health Department wants to help area women fight breast cancer through early detection.
The Coos County Public Health provides the federally funded breast and cervical cancer screening program to eligible women ages 40 to 64. The program also provides breast cancer screening to eligible men with symptoms such as breast lump or discharge. The program will pay for an office visit, a pap-smear, clinical breast exam and mammogram.

The health department’s program isn’t the only event going on this month. Bree’s Upscale Resale is hosting the fourth Fun and Fashion show Oct. 26 at the Sawdust Theater to raise awareness about breast cancer. Fashions from Bree’s resale and other Coquille stores will be shown. Guest speakers will talk about Medicare, other services, and getting fitted for a mastecomy bra. The event kicks off at 2 p.m.
The Center for Disease Control considers breast cancer as one of the most common forms of cancers in women, according to its Web site, http://www.cdc.gov.
In the most recent statistical study completed by the American Cancer Society, 182,460 women have been diagonsed with breast cancer. Information on cancer statistics, prevention and general information can be found the society’s Web site, http://www.cancer.org.
