forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Colette’s: Good Food + Hungry Minds, LLC, 3229 Broadway, Suite H. This is a chance for the community to discuss and learn more about the 10 statewide ballot measures up for consideration.
The ballot measures will affect criminal justice, education, tax law, and our democracy. The format of the
forum will ask the questions: “Is this measure a workable solution to a community problem?” and “Does this measure preserve democracy?”
Kari Koch from the Rural Organizing Project, a statewide organization based out of Scappoose will be at the event to help participants analyze the ballot measures as rural and small-town Oregonians. For more information, call 751-1475.
WednesdayMeet the mayorThe public is welcome to come and meet Mayor Jeff McKeown from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the law office of Scott McNutt, 1052 Southwest Blvd. in Coos Bay. ThursdayLetter deadlineThe Coos Bay School District’s board of directors announces openings on its Budget Committee for a term expiring June 30, 2009, and for a term expiring June 30, 2010. Dynamics of violenceAs part of a lecture series, Women Safety Resource Center, 1681 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay, presents “Dynamics of Domestic Violence and the Effect of DV on Children” at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The featured speakers are Stephanie Jakovac and Kathryn Cummings of Child Protective Services.
Native voicesCoos Bay Public Library will host noted historian and author Dr. Stephen Dow Beckham at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library. Dr. Beckham will present “Oregon’s Indian Voices: 1792-2008” based on his many years of research and writing on Native Americans and the American West, a press release said.
In his book “Oregon Indians: Voices from Two Centuries,” Dr. Beckham has compiled a rich documentary history of accounts of the events that shaped the lives of Oregon Indians from the late 18th century to the present in their own words. He will talk about how the book came to be written, and some of the trends that have influenced Oregon Indians.
This program is presented in conjunction with “Oregon is Indian Country,” an exhibit produced by the Oregon Historical Society and the state’s nine federally recognized tribes. For more information, call 756-6320 or 269-1101.
FridayJudges neededBandon High School and Marshfield High School will host the South Coast Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay on Friday. Judges are needed for rounds beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Judges can sign up to work for any part of the day. Tutors neededThe Coos County Literacy Council is short on tutors and will be recruiting volunteers to tutor individuals of all ages. New tutor training will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Attendance at both sessions is required to receive certification. Registration cost is $15, and scholarships are available. Light meals and refreshments will be offered throughout the training, and lunch will be provided on Saturday.
