High School Recap: Siuslaw girls race to big win at Philomath

Siuslaw’s girls had three of the top four finishers and dominated the 23-school Paul Mariman Invitational cross country meet at Philomath on Saturday.
Samantha Pummer led the top-ranked Vikings, finished first in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 19 minutes, 57 seconds. She was just in front of teammate Raelyn Robinson, and Siuslaw’s Clarita Twombley was fourth.
Linda Paredes finished ninth for the Vikings, who scored 30 points, to 126 for runner-up Sisters.
North Bend’s Katie Romanko was seventh, leading the Bulldogs to 10th in the team race.
Siuslaw’s boys finished second behind Sisters. The Outlaws had 55 points to 104 for the Vikings.
Parker Elder of Scappoose won the race in 16:22 and D.J. Flores of South Umpqua was second in 16:36. Siuslaw’s Joseph Campbell finished eighth and was the only South Coast runner in the top 10.
North Bend’s Trevor Berrian and Dan Flora were taking their SAT tests and the Bulldogs finished 10th in the team race.
Harrier Classic
Gold Beach’s Sydney Snook finished eighth while running against 30 larger schools in the Brooks Harrier Classic on Saturday at Albany.
Crater’s Kayleigh Tyerman won the race in a time of 18:20. Snook was timed in 19:30, and finished behind six Class 6A runners and a girl from Skyview High School in Washington.
Marshfield’s Jana Sadler finished 19th.
Team scores from the 35-school meet were not available.
FOOTBALL
Cruisers get first win
Kyle Blanton rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns and Powers got its first win of the season by overwhelming Prospect 54-12 on the road Friday.
Blanton scored on runs of 38 and 7 yards, and Joe Dunn added 188 yards and two touchdowns of his own on the ground. Freshman Cameron Perreault tacked on touchdown runs of 12 and 25 yards, and George Lewis found the end zone on a pair of 5-yard runs.
“They’re finally starting to play as a team,” said Powers coach Nick Gonzales. “They’ve been working really hard, even though they’ve been losing.”
Prospect scored on a 3-yard run from Keanen Johnson and a 40-yard pass from Josh Walton to Johnson.
The Cruisers visit Triad in Klamath Falls on Saturday this week.
